Targus, "the fiery", is a child of Esaros, and brother of Araxis. He has a fierce nature and loves to hunt. He carries the Sun Spear, which becomes empowered with Death - during the Celestial Gods' battle to keep Death away from the first moon, he impales Lornak and scatters him - but it is not possible to kill Death himself.
The plains nomads identify themselves with him and come to believe that they were created in his image, but they are in fact Clay People like the folk of the river valleys. When their hero Tarjek slays Hirven the Wyrm, Targus rewards him by giving the nomads mastery over animals - they become riders and herders. He has a son by Arilla, who is Deiros, Lord of Horses, who becomes their other patron god.
When the Storm Gods attacks the Targites, he will not be appeased and seeks vengeance. He creates the first three great fire drakes from stone eggs left within Hirven and gives them to the Targites. Armed and united, the Targites take revenge on the storm woshippers while Targus, Deiros and his Pure Celestial followers battle the Storm Gods.
Targus features in many stories of the sky gods:
