As a free thinker, Guangcun's main research interests comprise advanced microsystems, magnetic compounds, device physics, low-dimensional physics, nanophotonics with applications in bio-X, MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems), optoelectronics & biophotonics, and terahertz technology.
Guangcun is also an academic policy-maker and strategic consultant, serving as a Court member in City University of Hong Kong, which is the supreme advisory body of the University.
And meanwhile Standing Committee Member, in Verein der Fudan Absolventen und Mitglieder in Deutschland (FAMD) e.V. (from 2014 to 2016).
He is currently driving the growth of new materials and new 3D-printing & microsystem technology which has fast become the most capitalized technology in its sector. Guangcun has developed the business from Shanghai and Hong Kong, and has a lot of passions for supporting the start-up scene in the great China region.
He was the early proposer and co-planner of 上海微技术工业研究院 (SITRI), which is now one of the most important entity for Shanghai on becoming a global innovation center.
Guangcun received his B.Eng. degree in Electronic Information Engineering (EIE) from Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China in 2004, and M.S.degrees in Condensed Matter Physics from Fudan University Shanghai, in 2007. From 2007 to 2009, he was a Manager of Representative at Shanghai Jiading Industrial Zone Group Development Co. (also Jiading Industrial Zone Administrative Committee), Shanghai. He has previously undertaken research attachments at Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, CAS, China.
From August 2010 to August 2013, he has pursued Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics from the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, where he also served as council member from 2011 to 2012. His doctoral thesis title - "Investigations of Atomic-level Structure-property Relationship of Ternary Magnetic Metallic Alloys and Metal-pipe Waveguides for Sub-terahertz Application," C. H. Shek - Thesis Advisor.
From April 2012 to August 2012, he has been a visiting scholar working on nanomechanics and molecular dynamics simulation of nanotubes & 2D materials in The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia University, in the city of New York, USA, under supervision by Professor Xi Chen.
Dr Guangcun SHAN received his PhD in Materials Science and Physics in 2013 from City University of Hong Kong. Afterwards he worked as a postdoctoral scientist at Max-Planck Institute in Germany and also at the University of Hong Kong. In 2016, he got promoted to be full professor at Beihang University.
In 2018, he received Hong Kong K.C. Wong Foundation sponsorship, and was awarded with the Outstanding Young Scientist Awards by the Chinese Materials Research Society (C-MRS) in recognition of outstanding achievement and potential in the fields of glassy alloys. In recent years, he has also received many prizes and honours, including National Powerful Young Scientist nomination Award 2021; China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award and nomination of APEC Science Prize as China representative; IAAM Scientist Medal (2023); Technology Invention Award of the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2023.
He has published over 120 SCI journal papers and EI-index 20 conference papers. Dr. SHAN is a senior member of SPIE, C-SIG, C-BME, CCF, and C-MRS.
He has served in the program committees of several technical conferences and workshops, including MEMS, OFC, and as a referee of several international journals, such as IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, Nanoscale, Small, 2D Materials, Engineering, IEEE Photonics Journal, PCCP, RSC Advances and Optical Engineering.
