Gregory Pappas has a strong expertise in health examination surveys having started his federal career working at the National Center for Health Statistics on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). He has pioneered health examination surveys in less developed countries, first as the chief technical adviser to the Government of Pakistan, for the first National Health Survey of Pakistan (NHSP) 1990-94, a major contribution to global health statistics. He later designed and implemented the Uzbekistan National Health Survey (2002) while Deputy Director of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). While with the DHS he also designed and implemented national surveys that included HIV testing in Mali and the Dominican Republic, major innovations. Hew has also written about strategic and ethical issues related to health examination surveys.
