All ideas originate in the mind of the individual. Society has learned the power of influence the individual posses through historical events. In 1984, the value of humanity is extinguished from society. As Julia undresses, Winston thinks, "With its grace and carelessness it seemed to annihilate a whole culture, a whole system of thought, as though Big Brother and the Party and the Thought Police could all be swept into nothingness by a single splendid movement of the arm" (Orwell, 1984, 33). With a single movement, the grace of the woman before Winston abandons all loyalty and fear towards the party. Even with an action so small, feelings can take control and change an entire way of thinking. When society conforms into such that no one is willing to take a risk to experience these feelings, emotion will fade. Marcus also retaliates against his government. Shortly after being captured, Marcus reflects, “I took a mental inventory as I rode, thinking of everything that I had accomplished, that we had accomplished. The city, the country, the world was full of people who wouldn’t live the way the DHS wanted us to live. We’d fight forever” (Doctorow, Little, 342). Even though Marcus cannot actively fight the DHS any longer, the fight he started lives on through the lives and actions of those he inspired. An idea has the power to live on forever when an individual provokes passion in the hearts of others. These ideas are vital to the survival of society because they are the seed of change. Take Martin Luther King Junior. King died from a shot to the head, but his message lives on today. In a speech King said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that” (BrainyQuote). Martin Luther King Jr. lit a candle that may have not seemed bright at first, but ignited a nation. Children of all races are accepted in classrooms and people of all color have the opportunity to lead. President Barack Obama is the first black President of the United States. Society has come such a long way, but must be weary of undoing progress.
