Abstract. An explication is offered of Reid’s claim that the geometry of the visual field is spherical geometry. It is shown that the sphere is the only surface whose geometry coincides, in a certain strong sense, with the geometry of visibles.
Note. The aim of this paper is to explicate and establish a claim that can be found in James Van Cleve’s “Thomas Reid's Geometry of Visibles” and in Gideon Yaffe’s “Reconsidering Reid's Geometry of Visibles.”
