PLEASE PRINT OUT 1 COPY OF THE STUDENT CONTRACT AND ONE COPY OF THE STUDENT SAFETY AGREEMENT. BRING THESE TO CLASS WITH YOU ON THE FIRST DAY AS WE WILL GO OVER THEM
(Scroll to the bottom of this page to download the document)
The following items are the class requirements
I. Come to class on time.
When the bell rings, you are expected to be in your seat with your notebook open and ready to begin. If you are not, you will be considered late. This is considered part of your grade. Talking during class will result in two problems:
1) Loss of information and class notes
2) Disciplinary consequences such as the loss of points on upcoming tests/projects
II. Materials – Bring to class every day.
1. One binder with pockets or 5-subject notebook with folder,
2. Fully charged IPad
a. IPads may be used to take notes and complete group work during class. Using it for other actions will result in corrective action and/or loss of points.
3. 1 folder with pockets for labs
(This will remain in the classroom all year, you will not be getting this back at all)
4. 1highlighter
5. pens (multiple colors) and pencil(s)
6. calculator (non-graphing only) TI30Xa or TI30IIs are recommended. You will not be allowed to use a graphing calculator in class at ANY TIME
7. Chemistry the Physical Setting Review Book (to be bought from the book store). This MUST be brought to class with you every day.
III. Homework (5%)
All homework is due the next day. No late homework will be accepted. You are responsible for ALL work when absent. If you are absent the day a homework is due, it will not be accepted unless you email me a copy of the assignment proving it was already completed. All assignments will be listed on my website, which you can access by googling “Gonzalez Chemistry” or copying and pasting the following link: https://sites.google.com/site/gonzalezchemistry/. Students are required and responsible for checking the website daily for assignments including all changes made to the site before 4pm
IV. Laboratory Reports (15%)
Reports are due no later than two days after the lab is completed. This means if we have lab on Monday the lab report will be due on If you hand in a lab late, 5 points will be deducted to your grade for each day a lab is late. Since labs are only out of 40 points, this makes a huge difference. NYS regulates how many labs a student must have completed in order take the regents. Failure to have all of your lab reports completed, and in your lab folder, will result in you not being allowed to take the chemistry regents in June! Students should have a digital copy of ALL labs saved in case it gets misplaced. We will be having quarterly lab folder checks to make sure you are keeping your lab folder up to date.
V. Tests (50%)
Tests will cover class work, homework, labs, readings and films. Everything that is said or done in class may be on your test. Do not assume the only material that will be on the tests will be the unit we are on. Tests will also contain material from previous units as well. All tests must be signed and corrected to be counted as a homework grade. You will have several days to hand this in therefore I suggest you hand these in prior to the due date. If you are absent the day it is due, I will not accept it the next day.
1. To do Corrections:
a. Rewrite the question
b. Find the correct answer
c. Explain WHY this is the correct answer using references
A cumulative exam will be given at the end of each quarter which may be counted as two different grades.
VI. Quizzes (10%)
Quizzes may or may not be announced and will cover any material we have covered so far in the year. We will have at least one quiz a week so make sure you keep up with current information as well as old material.
VII. Quests (10%)
You will be given two weeks to complete each quest. They will be due the last day of that week. You are responsible for handing them in on time. No late work will be accepted.
VIII. Projects (10%)
Each quarter you will be given a project, at the beginning of the quarter, which can be either in a group or by yourself. Each project will have set guidelines that will be posted on my website. DO NOT WAIT TO THE LAST SECOND TO COMPLETE THESE PROJECTS!!!!.
IX. Grade
Your grade is composed of the following: 50% tests, 10% quizzes, 10% quests, 15% laboratory reports, 10% projects and 5% homework. This is a regents class and therefore you will be taking the NYS Regents Chemistry exam in June. This will count as a fifth quarter or 20% of your overall grade.
X. Attendance & Participation
Class attendance at St. Francis Prep is a major priority. All students are required to complete all required work even if they are absent. If a student is absent from class 6 or more times for any given quarter, this will be considered excessive absence. This will result in a mandatory 5 point deduction from the quarterly grade. Please be advised classes missed due to lateness or early dismissal will be included in this group. Missed classes resulting from retreats, school trips and official appointments in the school building should not be included in the total number of absences and therefore will not count toward the 5 point deduction.
XI. Extra Help
Chemistry is a very tough subject and I suggest students start coming to extra help or email, me, as soon as they have a question. DO NOT BE SHY! The schedule will be posted on the bottom of my homepage. Almost all of the science teachers can help you. You are allowed to attend other teacher’s extra help sessions as well as my own. I encourage my students to attend as many extra help sessions with as many teachers as they can.
I look forward to a successful year. If there is anything I can do to help, please feel free to email me at kgammello@sfponline.org or call me at 718-423-8810 ext 231.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Gonzalez
