Tuesday 8 May - Friday 11 May

Good Vibrations

As part of this year's Gong Festival, the gamelan-in-prisons charity Good Vibrations will be running a project at Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution in Barnard Castle. The lads at the prison will get the chance to try out playing gamelan, learn a traditional piece or two, and experiment with free improvisation and creating their own group compositions using the gamelan instruments. The aim of the project is to help lads at the prison, particularly those that are currently unemployed or "hard to reach", develop crucial life skills such as team working, listening and communication, and to increase their confidence and motivation to engage with other constructive activities. The project will run from Tuesday 8 May until Friday 11 May, with the final session being an informal performance of the music the lads have created during the week. For the final performance they will be joined by the well-known Balinese dancer Ni Made Pujawati.

Ni Made will also be dancing at other Gong Festival events.
