The New Stone Age (Agricultural Revolution Crash Course video clip), or Neolithic Age, lasted until about 4,000 years ago.
People improved tools by polishing or grinding them. Many were no longer nomads, wandering in search of food.
Instead, they settled in villages and developed agriculture—the raising of crops for food. They also
practiced domestication—the taming of animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs.
Prehistoric people had been hunter-gatherers, people who lived by hunting animals and
gathering plants for food. The shift from food gathering to food producing is called the Neolithic
agricultural revolution. Agriculture changed the way people lived. People lived in permanent
settlements that grew larger and more complex. Some grew into small cities. In the Middle East,
scientists have discovered remains of cities dating back to 8000 B.C.
