The Death of Francis Brown
The Globe's report from the evening paper of June 13 1896, detailing the accidental death earlier in the day of Francis Brown.
The following map locates the place where the newspaper report describes Francis Brown being thrown from the runaway wagon. Also shown is the 98 Wood St home of William J. Townley and his family, as well as the Fire Hall at which Samuel Townley had years earlier served.
Note: (March 24, 2009) There is a correction to map's depiction of the intersection of College and Carlton, with Yonge Street. The bend that Carlton follows today to meet directly opposite College was the result of a capital works project undertaken by the city during the Great Depression. When Francis Brown died at the corner of Carlton and Yong, that intersection was still slightly south of where College met (and still meets) Yonge Street.
A photograph from about 1915 shows what the Yonge / Carlton / College intersection once looked like. The second picture was taken from approximately the same location, show the scene as it appears now.
