The United States Army Special Forces / Green Berets were established in 1952.

Fearing the growing threat of the Viet Cong insurgency to the Vietnamese government, President John F. Kennedy began activating special forces units in anticipation of their insurgency combat expertise in 1961. The 5th Special Forces Group was among those units activated in 1961, and while attending training at the Special Warfare Center, Kennedy visited the units and personally approved the distinctive Special Force's Green Beret

The Green Berets mission closely matches that of the fictional GI JOE team.

The Green Berets entered American pop culture with the 1968 John Wayne movie called, The Green Berets", based on a book by Robin Moore.

Then again in the 1980's through Sylvester Stallone's Rambo movies, with the character John Rambo as a former Green Beret Vietnam veteran.
