Second GFOI Forest Monitoring Workshop

Kathmandu, Nepal

June 23 – 28, 2014, Hotel Himalaya Kathmandu

Workshop Context and Objective:

To provide guidance to GFOI country representatives on the various decisions needed and practical options available for establishment of national systems for estimation of forest carbon budgets and greenhouse gas inventories that address IPCC “Good Practice Guidelines” criteria and UNFCCC reporting requirements. Showcase several data-integration and modeling approaches implemented by some countries such as Canada, Australia and United States, and organizations that integrate ground and satellite data for carbon accounting and reporting.

Main Themes:

· Key Decisions and choices for national-scale carbon accounting models that satisfy GHG inventory needs for UNFCCC national reports and REDD+ MRV needs

· Distinctions between science-based carbon-cycle models, and operational national Greenhouse Gas emission models

· Role of in-situ data for integration with terrestrial remote sensing products into carbon models

· Better understanding of uncertainties associated with input data sources, forest inventory, remote sensing data, and carbon models

· Cost: Benefit and efforts for parameterization of national carbon accounting models
