The goal of this training was to produce a land cover (change) map of Zambia. The government of Zambia with support of ISFL SilvaCarbon intends to deliver a product that will give policy makers and project managers in Zambia information on current land cover, land cover change, drivers of deforestation and areas where deforestation is occurring at alarming rates.
In the past, the RCMRD (Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development) produced a land cover map for Zambia that was not fully endorsed at a governmental level due to accuracy issues. In order to improve on accuracy, special attention should be given to seasonality and discrimination among woodlands and grasslands with trees.
During a week, participants learnt about:
Extracting, using and interacting with current CODED and CCDC-generated datasets in GEE.
Running CODED and CCDC in GEE for construction of maps and
Selecting a sample, collecting reference observations, and estimating area and map accuracy
