I have been a lover of Scandinavian art and culture for many years and it is only recently that I have consciously used any of the emotional experiences acquired, in my painting. The lyrical and impassioned characteristics which I admire so much in the poetry and music of writers and composers of these northern lands has now started to permeate my latest work
220 Sadness of the Moon 2005
245 Grey Day at Grez 2007
210 Shortening Days 2004
The first indication of this interest came immediately after my exhibition at NSAT in September 2005 when I was looking to move forward from the basic theme of the latest paintings but not directly breaking from the architectural construction of the preceding works. After reading some of Verner von Heidenstam’s (1859-1940) verses from “Einsamhetens Tankar” ( Thoughts of Solitude ) I started on a single work suggested by this title, but soon realised that it could be used for a whole new series of paintings (8 to date). The main compositional difference was the addition of a single circle placed in the upper right hand corner which could be read as just a circular motif or related to the sun or moon dependant upon the viewers interpretation of the painting’s imagery and the prevailing atmospheric envelope. The colour of these paintings was also much more reserved, using closely related hues and sometimes verging on the monochromatic.
