Welcome to Personalized Learning. The enactment of Act 77: Flexible Pathways, serves to help students achieve academic success, be prepared for post-secondary opportunities, and engage actively in civic life. Schools will need to ensure that they have designed a PLP process for implementation, facilitated proficiency-based learning, and enacted flexible pathways opportunities for students. Additionally, schools will be expected to initiate a process for students to identify their goals, learning styles, and abilities and align this with the school's academic expectations and student's pathway toward graduation.
The focus of this course will be to build a practical understanding of personalized learning, to develop an age appropriate personalized learning implementation plan for your educational setting, and to develop strategies for the integration of standards-based literacy and content proficiencies within the context of your personal learning program and curriculum. This course will explore the conceptual frameworks that ground the concept of personalized learning and explore how schools have chosen to use them.
Students will design course topics of study; become an expert on one area and facilitate the learning of others; hear from practitioners in the field; create their own personalized learning plan and reflect on course topics in relation; propose a plan for personalized learning in their classroom, school, and/or district, and identify appropriate technologies and 21st century learning platforms that promote personalized learning.
Participants will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of multiple technologies appropriate for their educational setting, to consider larger themes of community, family involvement, and sustainability, and to develop professional resources related to collaborative and continued learning. Class activities will include readings, discussions, lectures, project-based learning, guest speakers, and personalized learning practices.
The mission of the Saint Michael’s College Education Department is the advancement of culture through education, with an emphasis on creativity, curiosity, collaboration, reflection, and social justice. Students are expected to apply these values to their work in this course.
