The world is under lockdown due to Corona virus.
This is the challenge for the first day, what work would I be scared to make?
I need sympathy cards and are not advised to leave the flat for 11 more weeks except for one walk
I am scared to make these because I already need one and may need more. I have to make some.
An interesting challenge, I immediately thought of the Triang dolls house I used to have but decided that a more contemporary home was required so I chose our local pub which we miss but don't visit much nowadays and arn't allowed to anyway at the moment under lockdown. Pubs are shut, all that beer will be going stale.
A small painted model of our local pub with its green tiled exterior, tall chimneys and irregular windows.
Basically I need to breathe, something that I have to work a bit harder at nowadays and especially with the current threat of coronavirus and previously with pollution in the Midlands.
A pen line illustration of a head in silhouette with the words I need air throughout.
Air swirls outside the face in colourful patterns with the clearest entering the mouth
So today I decided to work from an excellent demo by a generous artist Robert Brindley RSMA who is sharing his technique. Not really cheating but cheating myself by being lazy and not original. Its not finished as tea arrived and the settee is more comfy so I'm settled now to watch TV. Its taken all day as many layers need to dry during the session. Still its great to focus on this and not the terrible news. Playing Scrabble online too with many strangers who are trying to to beat me, he he!
I will call it 'the second walk' as we are only allowed one a day under lockdown, two walks would be cheating but I dont suppose this man would meet anybody.
Well "failure" is the actual brief, what a ngative brief to set when we all need cheering up while social distancing, and on such a lovely day when everyone could be out enjoying themselves!!!
So here's my response, FAILURE today would be all my little people not social distancing.
These little characters exist to raise money for Shine Cancer Support which helps young adults in their 20s 30s and 40s
Todays brief was easy as I make myself earrings from my artwork. They are very lightweight and incredibly strong.
I made some recently with the actual fabric pattern on them. Quite effective with an outfit
I think I will call it "Remade Artwork : Earrings"
Today's brief is about speed. Well I am definitely a tortoise as I took nearly all day to draw this rather clumsy small tortoiseshell butterfly.
I need a title, "As fast as a Tortoiseshell"
There are a lot of paintings of mine around the world thanks give aways and to the odd portfolio clearout and a few commissions and gallery sales and this is my legacy I suppose.
I considered doing a contact sheet of works but that would look naff so I settled on a photo of my fun hats and facinators. Its a beautiful photo and worth sharing and I think they will be a legacy, allbeit in a kiddies fancy dress box probably, anyway I enjoy looking at them
Title Legacy for Better Times
Oh, this brief applies to what I did yesterday! I tidied up my Art Files on my laptop. So what shall I do today? More of the same and make it visual maybe. I would like to print contact sheets of work for my log.
So here you are. I did it as follows. selected an image in windows 10 then using the drop down menu on the right I altered the file name to the title. I edited images as needed too, then when all finished I selected all images I wanted on my contact sheet and right clicked, selected print and then used the drop down menu to find contact sheet. Jus printed on ordinary paper. Hey presto! Success.
So I printed that then to make an image for the web I scanned that print back in and titled in in PSP9,. Could be useful sometime, maybe on the web. The print out will go in my log, that is useful, especially for titles.
Better call it Work Admin
I have been putting off making a negative of leaves for a while. I will use it for making printing stamps once it is dry. The stamps will be really useful. It has to be a smoothly drawn image without pixels which took me all day to get right. I eventually succeeded by tracing my bitmap drawings in silhouette studio, then filling in the silhouettes with black before printing.
3 layers of black ink printed in the same place made a dark enough negative but it needs to dry
My work on cards is very accessible. I spent today making stamps from yesterdays imagery and used them on the back of this hand made card.
I always try to send hand made cards so I consider this the best answer to today's brief but I am sure I have deliberately mis-interpreted it.
I will call it "Creative Messages"
This card has a dyed tissue background to a cut-out thank you message. On the back is a hand stamped floral pattern using some of the stamps I have made from yesterdays negative.
A perfect brief for me today as I wanted to finish making stamps and use them in the background to this card for my new twin great nieces. 'Apple' and 'Rain' nicknames only. Leaving hospital today and born during this awful lockdown.
The background is pastel dust rubbed through a stencil then stamped with some of the stamps I have made over the last 2 days.
Called ... Apple and Rain Babies
The image shows a congratulations card with a hand stamped leafy background and two shiny decorative prams cut from metallic card.
We are all self isolating so collaboration is a bit tricky. I asked for an idea what my son would like on a birthday card to his sister. He chose a photo and here is his instruction. I will send for approval so it is a collaboration of sorts. I will call it Collaboration
Ha ha, I did ths yesterday, so today I am thinking about something that has helped me cure my trigger finger, maybe I should make them for others. I hated the pink plastic medical versions.
These are in coloured embossed leather and made to fit. they allow a little movement but stop the finger locking down to the palm at night, very painful.
Title "Preventing Pain"
I have been wanting experiment with easy background techiques for my polymer reliefs to try different colourways. Quick and easy. This is pastel dust rubbed in, then acrylic ink imagery. It doesn't resist the ink which is good to know but it does look quite muted on the paper, not on the screen.
Title Pastel Skies and Inky Boats
During this lockdown time people are being asked to sacrifice a lot, sometimes even their lives and possibly their families lives too by exposing them to the Corona virus. So many lovely people are losing their lives trying to help others especially carers and medical staff.
Doing Art every day can be escapism which is sorely needed but it can also pass on messages. There is a lot of self-indulgent Art in ths challenge, mine included, but its difficult to know how to help. Maybe one image can make a difference, even in a little way.
Having just seen appalling behaviour from a teen (who threw a full doggy waste bag at an old lady who was politely asking her not to let her alsation fowl the grass where the babies play) I feel more respect is needed generally. Dogs arn't even allowed here supposedly and she was foul mouthed too.
So my mood prompted this 5 minute art piece. Titled Get Useful
Researching a process. I decided to try out my sennelier oil pastels again today to see if I want to keep them. First I needed an image I would like to use as a starting point. I used this photo by Viacheslav who lets some of his photos be used by artists and changed it in PSP to colours that inspired me.
I made the usual mistake of working too small for oil pastels but rather liked the photo so here it is.
I will call it Homage to Viacheslav Krasnoperov whose work I greatly admire
I enjoy modifying photos to produce new works in colours and shapes I enjoy. Here is a Durdle Door Paper Cut Out that exists in digital form only at present. My relatives see me doing a lot of work on my laptop as I develop my ideas.
Title. Durdle Door Cut Out
We have far too many apples due to ordering fruit boxes during this lockdown. They always have apples, even the salad boxes have apples. Its so difficult to get a supermarket delivery that we rely on these boxes we can order, but no choice as to whats in them, which is nice in a way, its a surprise. But they always have apples
Title Only 3 Apples (which is a joke really as we have lots.)
If I am going to use resources to produce things I think that the item should contribute something, a message or create emotion. This one is positive escapism which is needed at the moment while we are at war with this virus.
Deaths today were less than 500 which is a sign that the lockdown is working. But we have another 3 weeks to go and possibly longer for my age group.

A view out of the window in my sketchbook. It was hot. It started out monochrome but very soon I added colour. So here is a cheating version. which looks ok
Title Grey view on a hot lockdown day
It has to be chocolate. Especially after Easter when I am always reminded that I like Cadburys Milk Chocolate. I just cannot leave my Easter Egg alone.
Heres a crayon drawing of my current bar on one of my favourite plates
Title Chocolate Delight
The weather is so lovely that it had to be a sunhat. I had some canvas and old curtain remnants and plenty cotton so it was just a case of doing it.
I found a bucket hat pattern on the web which saved all the guesswork. I have had a request for another.
Title I made a bucket hat
Easy brief to answer as I am using a my work as a logo on a scrabble game online. I did have a photo of me but it attracted a few creeps, which wasnt too bad as quite flattering really, but they play a rubbish game!
Title .. Representing ME
Today I am mask making for the FB Frontline Facemasks group. They have produced a pattern which allows for a filter to be used and bendable wires to creat a snug fit round the nose, so I chose them to work for. My 50 year old sewing machine is coping really well and I am proud of it. I'm having to find things to cut up and use, old curtains and cushion covers. When I have done twelve the area coordinator will collect them.
Title Fighting the Virus
The magic qualities of paint interest me although I am not that inclined to usd them in my work as I like to be more in control. I will often start a painting enjoying the mixes and energy of the process bt then bring it under control.
Title Energy
I needed to make a card today for a friend so this was a very useful brief. I enjoyed using my dyed tissue as a bakground and colouring the words with crayon.
Title Artwork Greeting Card
Whats a "reivew" ?
Well, I looked it up and there's no such word so are they being funny or just lexidiccy?
So I did other things today as well as this.
Title When is a reivew not a review?
This is a one path spiral which is a commitment to going one way and to reach one goal.
I enjoyed a workshop I did today with Michelle Rumney on Labyrinths. Interesting to see how long they have been used and why. Not that I am into that sort of thing but I can appreciate the fact that in my own experience a more commited path would be beneficial. Hence the labyrinth which is only one path and not a maze. Taking the path gives time for reflection.
Title Commit and Walk the One Path
For a while now I have been meaning to try my bleed tissue. So I experimented with it the cut up the result to include in another artwork. This time experimenting with embroidery on the sewing machine onto paper collaged onto fabric. I have begun another challenge with the textile online community so this work relates to that, after all the 30/30 ends today.
