Deafness and hearing loss affects an estimated 34 million people in the US. Since 1978, Community Services for the Deaf (CSD) has provided a wide range of programs and interpreting services to meet the needs of Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing and/or those otherwise impacted by hearing loss. For many years, CSD has been a designated Community Center for the Deaf (CCD), and as such works to ensure access to training, support and communication services for Deaf, hard of hearing, their families and others within the community.
Specialized services provided by CSD include:
Walk-In Services; 24/7 Interpreting/Communication Services;
Counseling and Case Management; Independent Living Skills Training; Information, Advocacy and Referral Services, ASL Classes, Educational Services and Specialized Support Training for Employers of/those that are interested in employing Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing and Deafblind.
Services are available for the following counties: Montgomery, Preble,
Darke, Mercer, Auglaize, Shelby, Miami, Logan, Champaign, Clark,
Greene, Fayette and northern Warren. For information about other CCD's

Walk-In Service Hours:
CSD offers open walk-in hours for many services, including community access to Videophone and computer, staff support, advocacy and resource information.

No appointment is needed to receive walk-in assistance for information, advocacy and referral support. We can assist with understanding paperwork, filling out applications, making calls, answering questions, accessing resources, and much more. Sign Language Interpreting Services:
American Sign Language, SEE, Deaf-Blind and Oral interpreting are available. CSD provides interpreting services for a variety of events and needs, including: doctor's appointments; legal proceedings; educational programs; employment matters; court hearings, and many other scheduled meetings. Services are also available for special events in the community.
C-Print Services: C-Print is a computer-aided, speech-to-print captioning service that uses technology to ensure access to communication services. The trained captionist uses special software to type spoken information, which instantly appears on the laptop, tablet or other device available to the service recipient. A transcript is provided from this service which makes it ideal for educational, training, legal and medical settings. These services are available on-site and through remote transmission. It is also useful when working with individuals who are Hard-of-Hearing, and those who are not skilled in ASL or other interpreting/communication methods.

Counseling & Case Management:
Counseling and case management services are available for Deaf and Hard-of Hearing individuals, families and couples. These services include assessments, service plan development, and mental and behavioral health counseling provided by licensed and skilled staff. Psychiatric services that include pharmacologic medication management are also available for those in counseling.

Independent Living Skills Training:
To enable Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals to live as independently as possible within the community, CSD provides assistance in learning new skills and recovering abilities that may have decreased or never been learned as a result of hearing loss, isolation, at-risk behaviors or disability. Trained staffs help individuals learn self-care, fiscal responsibility, medication management and problem-solving skills, and teach individuals to self-advocate for communication access and other important services. CSD staffs provide transportation, identify opportunities for socialization and teach interpersonal skills to reduce isolation and increase community engagement. For those interested in employment or education, staffs support access to vocational rehabilitation and employment training with OOD.
Information, Advocacy and Referral:
CSD has general information about deafness and hearing loss, and assists in locating community resources to support individual needs. Staffs are also available to provide information about the
Americans with Disabilities Act, and may provide advocacy
and other support to ensure equal access to services.

Sign Language Classes:
Community Services for the Deaf offers American Sign Language I & II. Students learn basic communication sign language in addition to learning about Deaf culture and the history of sign language.
Sign Language Class In-Service:
If you have a large group of people, we would be happy to set up an in-service for you. We can work with any group including offices, businesses, school groups, scout groups, etc. and are able to cover a variety of topics. Learn more
Education about Deaf Culture:
CSD provides in-service sessions about Deaf Culture, basics on Deafness and hearing loss, Understanding Americans with Disabilities Act, using interpreting services, and other topics.
Prevention Services & Camping Activities for Deaf/KODA Kids:
DeafEND is our curriculum-based prevention program that serves Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing and hearing youth; teaching risks of ATOD use, increasing protective factors and developing drug-free lifestyles among children and teens. Prevention programs are available to schools, camps and other community partners. Camping and leadership programs are also provided to support Deaf and KODA (Kids of Deaf Adults) kids. WORKING TOGETHER: Deaf & Hearing People Training
Support Groups, Consultations, In-Service Training on Deaf Culture,
"Working Together" - employer training to support cultural diversity awareness and understanding of biases that will increase state-wide employment of

Services are available across Ohio to support those in need of vocational services, employment training and job placement, and those seeking disability determination through the office of
Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD).
"Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) is the State of Ohio agency that partners with Ohioans with disabilities to achieve quality employment, independence and Social Security disability determination outcomes. " Services are also available for youth transition, including pre-employment training and support.
