Week 2: Day 3
This morning I woke up to the screams of what sounded like a thousand rabid children. Outside the room I am staying in is a large patio which is shared by the elementary school building next door. At first the roars were joined by very loud Josh Groban playing on a boombox. My confusion tripled when the song changed to what I can’t help bus assume to be Italian Country music. When I looked outside I saw five girls and five boys line dancing back and forth across the yard, while a woman choreographed with a megaphone and boombox. In the corner were about 10 six year old children climbing on a jungle gym and 50 more playing on the grass in front of the building. I saw something similar in Mexico, when my family and I wandered into a square and saw a bunch of children dancing to Daddy Yankee. As I finished getting ready the song changed to Beauty and the Beast.
This afternoon, Maria Grazia took us the the market on Via Septembre XX. The entrance is a small opening to a warehouse in next to a flower stand. The market was inside a muggy
warehouse with high ceilings. Along the wall was a small alley that wrapped around the whole building. Down this alley were the meats and pastries. At each stand was an array of different salami, prociuto, and other meats I could not recognize. Along the inside of the room were fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, and fishes. While I knew most of them, there were some things I’d never seen before. Everything was fresh and colorful. I had no idea that all of this was hidden right next to the bus stop I’d passed every day!
Since we went to the market after school, we took a different bus home today. Normally for dinner we would walk down to the same market. But today the bus took us to the top of Via Zara. Looking out the window I saw a bunch of stores I had not been to yet. There was a pasta shop, a bakery, a cafe, and another grocery store. So, after we got off the bus, we went exploring. We discovered a bunch of new and exciting options for dinner! With an armful of new foods to try, we headed back to the Marcelline to enjoy dinner.
