Training

Training Times:

All flyball dogs train on Saturday mornings at Centenary Park as a part of Frankston Dog Obedience Club Inc.

Competition Dogs- 10am - 11:30am

Beginners- 11:30am - 12:30am

We also train on Wednesday nights during daylight savings at 6pm & during summer, we have combined training at 10am on Saturdays while the rest of FDOC is on Christmas Break - please see the Training Calendar for these dates

Remember to warm up your dogs before their training session and also cool them down after their session; this is usually taking them for a walk around the oval to warm up and/or cool down and relax their muscles. Warm ups and cool downs are done to avoid injury and cramping in the dogs.

Please note that all competition handlers are expected to assist with set up (approximately 20-30 mins before training) and all beginner and intermediate handlers are expected to assist with pack up at the completion of their training session.

Wet Weather and Heat Policy:

Training will be cancelled if the weather forecast for Melbourne is 33 degrees or over. On the other hand, if it's bucketing down with rain, training will also be cancelled due to the conditions being unsafe for the dogs. If in doubt, please contact either Lauren or James.

How Do We Train?

At Frankston, we use positive reinforcement methods to train, the dogs are rewarded for completing set behaviours. We use a shaping approach to training where dogs are encouraged to complete small steps one at a time and rewarded for each of these. Dogs can be rewarded with food, games, toys or anything else that motivates them to perform a behaviour again.

Generally, we'll work on the boxturn and recalls over the four jumps separately, slowing bringing them together to make a full run. We also work on getting the dogs to cross each other in a recall, starting at beginner levels; this is the start of our crosses. Back-end awareness and crossfit training are also apart of our curriculum.
