Strategies

The Foote Sanctuary Management and Friends is made up of community-based volunteers that want to tackle the problem of the conservation of the Foote Sanctuary via a community volunteer approach as set out in the Sunshine Coast Council's “Environment and Liveability Strategy" and under the auspices of the Council's Bushcare program. Thus, our projects span the whole conservation effort. We care for the protection of wildlife and flora populations in the Sanctuary precinct as much as we care for improving the level of community participation within the Sanctuary.

The factors that influence what strategies we choose and adopt are complex and ecological, as well as social, economic, and even political. For example, some of our long term projects depend on funding from various levels of government as well as local clubs, business’ and residents.

The Management body have divided the Sanctuary into 8 Management Zones, it is hopeful that we would have community interest in working within a zone that may be geologically close to or hold an interest for community volunteers. Each of these working zones would need to identify, prioritise and establish costs of issues for action and be answerable to the overall Management committee, who would in turn liaise with Council giving suggestions and constructive input into the management of this very special area within our community.

Our long term aim is to recreate the original ecosystems by removal of weeds and planting local provenance species. By recreating these natural habitats it is hoped that they will be repopulated by as many of the native animals that also lived in the area.
