The Fluidization Laboratory at Department of chemical and biological engineering, Korea National University of Transportation, is dedicated to pioneering research in the field of fluidization technology and multi-phase flow systems. Fluidization is a core technology in chemical, energy, and environmental engineering, enabling efficient contact between solids and fluids.
Under the direction of Prof. Sung Won Kim, our lab explores both fundamental phenomena and cutting-edge industrial applications.
Our mission is to understand the complex behaviors of gas-solid, liquid-solid, and gas-liquid-solid mixtures to design highly efficient and sustainable industrial processes.
Our research is interdisciplinary, combining experimental investigation with advanced computational modeling. We focus on areas that address critical industrial and global challenges:
Basic research on FLUIDIZATION
Exploring new regime of fluidized bed of emerging powder such as carbon nanotube and high performance sorbents.
Advanced Reactor Engineering
Designing, scaling up, and optimizing novel fluidized bed reactors for processes like hydrogen steel making, Energy production, and Catalytic Synthesis of carbon nanotubes.
Computational Particle-Fluid Dynamics (CPFD)
Developing and utilizing computational tools (e.g., Barracuda software) to accurately simulate particle-fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and reaction kinetics within complex reactors.
Sustainable Energy & Environment
Applying fluidized bed and bubble column to sustainable technologies, including Turquoise Hydrogen and liquid metal solar receiver for solar energy utilization.
Powder Technology & Granular Mechanics
Investigating the behavior of cohesive and non-cohesive powders, focusing on particle flow, segregation, and mixing phenomena.
