The Independent Guards: Operating out of St. Augustine/Jacksonville. Unit contact is tigmess1861@gmail.com. Their website: TIG Mess. Unit was founded by myself and 2 other pards at the Wilson's Creek 150th event in Missouri. We saw the need for a campaigner mess that actually worked closely with the 'mainstreamers' in the hobby. In the Midwest, campaigners and mainstreamers did not always get along. We began the group and found a unit (17th Mo) to associate with. Working with them, both units had wild success during the 150ths. Both the host unit and our mess grew. Or mess started with 3, when I moved from Missouri to Florida in 2014 we had over 20 members. The mess still fields companies on their own or in joint effort with the 17th MO. When I moved to Florida, we started the Florida detachment of the mess. I sucked my brother in law into the hobby and we have grown from there to 7 members now. We had been doing Confederate, but recently decided to go Federal for all in state events. We will still go Confederate for campaigner/immersion events, but all Florida events we will be doing Federal. We have affiliated with the 17th Conn. Co. H. As we did in the midwest, I think campaigners and mainstreamers working together is the only way to really make this hobby successful. While we are a campaigner mess, we do NOT belittle others on their impressions. It is a hobby and people take it as far as they like or their personal funds can. We understand this and simply strive to educate the public and have fun with friends and family while doing it. We do hold a rank structure when falling in with the rest of the unit at campaigner events throughout the nation, however, while we are simply affiliates within the 17th Conn. we will just fight as privates within their ranks as it is their unit, and they have been gracious enough to host us.
