Introduction and History

The Trust was set up in 2004, with the name of Fisherfolk's Charitable Dispensary Trust, initially to facilitate the provision of medical care for fishermen and their families living along the Tanzanian coast between Tanga and Pangani. In recent years the Trust has widened its brief in accordance with the constitution, Aims and Objects, "(iii) To identify and assist underprivileged members of society in the rural coastal belt of Tanga Region such as women and girls, disabled and orphans" and "(iv) To procure finances and other material assistance required in the achievement of the aims and objectives of the Trust", and is accordingly now involved with maternity and child care and education, although currently not with medical care. Also in accordance with this, the name was changed from Fisherfolk's Charitable Dispensary Trust to Fisherfolks Charitable Development Trust.

The Trust had a long period of limited activity maintaining the medical buildings while seeking financial support for their use. The Trustees have now received the first four girls at the House of Pearls (see under Maternity) at this site, having already cared for one girl in need at the Marijani Home in Lushoto in 2020, while the House of Pearls was being renovated.

As the Marijani Home is primarily a hostel for children attending school, it is not planned to care for more girls who are pregnant there, they will all be taken care of at the House of Pearls.
