Children of Choba Primary and Nursery School

Following the appointment of Ms Valerie McGivern as a Trustee in October 2009, it was decided that her education project, Children of Choba Primary and Nursery School which is located in Pangani, should function within the work of the Trust. Ms McGivern had registered a UK charity, childrenofchoba.org.uk for promotion and fundraising in Europe. Ms McGivern is therefore Director of FCDT Education Department and is now also Vice-Chairman of the Trust. The Head Teacher of Choba, Mr Abraham Temu, having been Vice-Chairman of FCDT for several years, was appointed Chairman on 22nd July 2020.

Since 2015 the school has had standards 1-7, while around a hundred children attend the Nursery school. Standards 4 and 7 results every year from 2015 to 2020 have been excellent, all Standard 7 students have gone on to secondary schools, many of them to one of the best in Tanzania, and the first two groups of Form Four leavers all gained high grades and places in Form 5. FISHERFOLKS EDUCATION SPONSORSHIPS

As well as the huge amount of support raised by Valerie for Choba and also in sponsorships for their former students continuing into higher education, several other children have been sponsored through Fisherfolks Trust in recent years. In the 2020 Primary School Leaving Examination, Choba has again come first in Pangani District and Rosmini first in Lushoto District (these are in the same category, schools with more than 40 in the class). Additionally one girl sponsored through Fisherfolks Trust at Indian Ocean in Tanga, did very well in the Standard Four examination 2019, and is now continuing at Ebenezer, which came first in Standard Seven PSLE out of schools in this category in Tanga City in 2019 and 2020. Tumaini, who completed her primary education at Rosmini and is in Form One in 2021, is also a sponsored student.
