said Finian Perth in Hadleigh is good to excellent at explaining their problems and treatment needed.
Treatment consists of safe, mainly gentle, specific adjustments, done by hand to free joints and other areas of the body that are not moving properly.
The treatment does not usually hurt and generally uses a short thrust to a specific joint, which might result in an audible "click". This "click" is the sound of small bubbles of gas "popping" in the lubricating fluid within the joint as pressure is released from within.
With Dr. Perth, this safe and effective treatment is supported by medical acupuncture, gentle rehabilitative exercise, advice on the correct use of ice and heat to reduce inflammation and advice on nutritional and lifestyle changes.

Back pain
With at least four out of every five adults experiencing back pain at some point in their lives, low back pain is one of the most common conditions we treat at our practices in Ipswich and Hadleigh.
Causes of Back Pain
The causes of low back pain vary from poor lifting position or incorrect carrying of heavy weights, to poor posture, stress, pregnancy and general wear and tear.
Our bodies are supported by the spine, which surrounds and protects our spinal cord and nervous system. Nerves leave the spinal cord between the vertebrae. Therefore, injury may not only lead to local inflammation and pain, but also to irritation of the spinal nerves causing pain elsewhere in the body. Commonly the pain will refer into the buttock and the back or front of the thigh and occasionally all the way to the foot and toes.
A common myth is that acute low back pain is caused by a ‘slipped disc’. Discs cannot slip – they can become damaged and bulge and this in turn may put pressure on spinal nerves which may cause leg pain or sciatica.
Our treatment for back pain
Acute, sub-acute and chronic low back pains respond well to our treatment. Official government guidelines from NICE and guidelines from the Royal College of General Practitioners suggest the early referral for Chiropractic treatment, such as ours at Perth Chiropractic in Ipswich is the most effective way of dealing with acute and chronic low back pain.
Headaches & Migraines treated by Dr Perth* in Hadleigh
There are many types of headaches which present themselves in different ways. The International Headache Society in 1988 released criteria on classification in which twelve different categories were presented.
Main types of headaches
There are three main types of headaches:
1. Cervicogenic headaches usually caused by misalignment of vertebrae or nerve irritation in the upper neck. This causes pain from the back of the head to the front on only on one side of the head.
2. Migraine headaches These can be very distressing and last from a few hours to several days. Symptoms include pain, dizziness, nausea, and visual disturbance.
3. Tension-Type headaches The most common type of headache and the one we think as a “normal”, everyday headache. May feel like a constant ache that affects both sides of the head. Can last for an hour to even days in persistent examples.
Relief after treatment
Often patients who seek care from Dr. Perth DC* in Hadleigh or Ipswich, experience immediate relief from the symptoms of their cervicogenic headache following treatment.
Patients suffering with migraine and tension-type headache experience a significant reduction in the frequency and severity of headache episodes.
Neck Pain treated by Dr. Perth DC* in Hadleigh
Lifestyles and working practices today often result in us all spending too long sitting at a desk or leaning forward working on a computer or performing repetitive tasks. This often result in muscle tension from poor posture which applies extra pressure on the neck, back and shoulders, causing headaches, migraines or other neck pain.
Tension caused by stress can increase muscle tension, placing pressure on the joints in the neck which then irritates the spinal nerves, sometimes leading to “referred pain” in other parts of the body or numbness in shoulder, arm and hands.
The neck is vulnerable to damage as it supports the weight of the head. Neck injuries often occur when a person’s spine, usually the neck is suddenly thrown very quickly in one direction and then in the opposite direction causing injury to the joints, muscles, ligaments tendons and occasionally spinal structures. This often occurs as a result of a road traffic accident and is commonly known as “Whiplash”.
Our treatment and associated soft tissue therapy, mobilisation and exercise advice at Perth Chiropractic in Hadleigh or Ipswich will restore normal movement to the joints between the vertebrae of the spine, providing relief from the discomfort and pain.
The shoulder joint is a very shallow ball and socket joint therefore its stability is supplied from its surrounding soft tissues. The shoulder provides a wide range of movement; however, these characteristics make it prone to injury. There are four joints which have to function properly for good shoulder mobility.
Shoulder Pain Treated by Dr. Perth DC* in Ipswich & Hadleigh
Shoulder pain can be caused by sport or other injuries when the joint, muscles or ligaments become inflamed from undertaking repetitive motions, a fall, or yanking the arm as well as poor posture.
A condition commonly referred to as “frozen shoulder” also known as adhesive capsulitis occurs when chronic inflammation of the shoulder joint leads to the accumulation of scar tissue within and around the joint. If untreated the shoulder can become severely limited in motion.
Treatment of Shoulder Pain by Dr. Perth DC*
Restoring the shoulder to proper function requires a combined approach that addresses both the joint mechanics and the muscles that support joint function. Joint mechanics are best corrected with specific adjustments, mobilisation and soft tissue muscle therapy is effective at reducing the scar tissue within the muscles and the surrounding joint capsule.
Arthritis Pain treated by Dr. Perth DC* in Ipswich & Hadleigh
The medical term “arthritis” is used to describe joint pain or inflammation and is not in itself a diagnosis but rather a description of the joint. In arthritis, the joint inflammation may present as any combination of swelling, tenderness, stiffness, redness or warmth. There are several different types of arthritis but broadly speaking they can be split into two broad categories; osteoarthrosis and arthritis inflammatory arthropathies.Osteoarthrosis, the ‘wear and tear’ arthritis is the most common type especially as we age. It is caused when the cartilage which protects the ends of bones becomes worn and damaged. This can lead to the growth of bony spurs, inflammation and stiffness of the affected joint. When a joint is not functioning correctly it becomes painful and the muscles surrounding the joint tighten. Osteoarthritis tends to affect weight bearing joints, hips and knees, but it can also affect the hands and the spine.
Depending on the nature and extent of your condition, Dr Perth, will design an individual treatment programme to help improve your joint mobility. If necessary you will be referred to see a rheumatologist or orthopaedic consultant.
Home Help –
What to do at home if you are in acute pain
Localise the area the pain you feel the pain.
Place an ice pack in a tea towel and place upon the area for 10 - 15 minutes on and 10 - 15 minutes off Continue this procedure for a maximum of 5 cycles. This can be repeated again after a break of 2 - 3 hours.
For neck pain – keep your head in the least painful position, this will usually be looking away from the painful side, Try to keep your arms below shoulder height. If your head feels too "heavy" for your neck to support, Lay down with your head and neck upon a pillow to take the weight off your neck.
For the lower back and sciatic pain – lay face down. Place 2 pillows both under your pelvis and ankles. This is the ideal position to ice your lower back. It should be comfortable. You should definitely avoid sitting.
Alternatively, a second choice is to lay upon your back with 2 pillows under your bent knees.
Avoid sudden movement, coughing and sneezing.
Do not use heat, unless alternating it with cold as heat can increase inflammation.
if you are having difficulty controlling your bowel or bladder (wetting yourself), phone immediately or go to the A & E Department of your local hospital.
Call the clinic at the first opportunity and you will be seen as an emergency.
Note: Avoid any of the above if pain increases and contact the clinic for further advice.
