. Tarzan of the Apes

Afrikaanse olifanten maar Indische. De dieren kregen extra grote oren en slufen om ze er authentieker uit te laten zien.In de film rijdt Tarzan op een neushoorn. Weismuller deed deze stunt zelf. De neushoorn was afkomstig uit Tierpark Hagenbeck in Hamburg, Duitsland.

In 2003 werd de film opgenomen in de National Film Registry.

In de film was een kort fragment te zien waar Maureen O'Sullivan een paar minuten naakt te zien is. [Zie fragment hieronder rechts] Hierdoor kwam de film niet door de censuur van de net in te voeren Hayes-code en mocht toen maar door enkele bioscopen worden vertoond. Toen dit systeem midden jaren zestig was afgeschaft werd de film weer vrij verspreid. De film was in de tussentijd zijn auteursrechten verloren en bevind zich daardoor in het publiek domein. Maar was het echt Maureen O'Sullivan of....... op het internet vond ik de volgende quote: 'Maureen was doubled by Olympic swimmer, 5 time record holder Josephine McKim, who competed in the 1928 games with Johnny Weissmuller. The Hayes Code was in effect but differed per state so clothed & topless versions were also filmed. The double was used due to the difficulty in the swimming not because of the nudity. The scene where Jane is thrown from the tree is indeed a naked Maureen. This scene only appears as an extra on the DVD which is unfortunate because it is the most beautiful scene in the film.'

De volgens mij allerbeste Tarzan-film ooit gemaakt is: Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. [Zie het fragment hieronder links] Dit is een is een in 1984 gemaakte Britse film, geregisseerd door Hugh Hudson en gebaseerd op Edgar Rice Burroughs eerste boek over Tarzan. Acteur Christoffer Lambert speelt de rol van Tarzan (hoewel de naam Tarzan nooit wordt gebruikt in de film) en Andie McDowell speelt de rol van Jane.

'Christopher Lambert is Tarzan in Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. Raised by a gorilla that adopted him when her offspring was murdered, he learnt everything about growing up in the wild and soon discovered that he had humans as parents. In Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, Tarzan is taken back to civilization by a French explorer who reveals to him that he is in fact the heir of The Sixth Earl of Greystoke, played by Ralph Richardson. Andie MacDowell’s voice was dubbed over by that of Glenn Close in her role as Jane Porter in Greystoke. Ralph Richardson, who played the Sixth Earl of Greystoke, died shortly after filming ended, and he received a posthumous Oscar nomination.'

De derde film die ik op deze pagina wil bespreken is de Tarzan-film met Bo Derek: Tarzan, the Ape Man is a 1981 adventure film directed by John Derek. It stars Bo Derek, Richard Harris, John Philip Law and Miles O'Keeffe. The screenplay by Tom Rowe is loosely based on the novel Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs, but from the point of view of Jane Parker.

The original music score is composed by Perry Botkin Jr. Former Tarzan actor Jock Mahoney, billed as Jack O'Mahoney, was the film's stunt coordinator. The film is marketed with the tagline Unlike any other "Tarzan" you've ever seen! The original actor cast in the "Tarzan" role was fired [or quit] early in production, resulting in the sudden casting of his stunt double, Miles O'Keeffe, in the title role.

James Parker is a hunter in Africa, searching for a mythical "white ape." He is joined by his estranged daughter, Jane, after her mother's death. They discover the "white ape" is actually Tarzan, an uncivilized white man raised by apes living in the jungle. James continues to pursue Tarzan with the purpose of capturing him, dead or alive, and bringing him back to England.

Realizing that James is on his trail, Tarzan kidnaps Jane. Jane and Tarzan become fascinated by each other. Jane is then kidnapped by natives who intend to make her a wife of the tribe leader, forcing Tarzan into action.

The film was controversial in that Bo Derek appeared topless for long periods during the movie, notably in the closing sequences. This was one of the reasons why Edgar Rice Burroughs' estate sued the film's producers; the role of Tarzan seemed to be overshadowed by Derek's character.

Film critic and historian Leonard Maltin considers this one of the worst films ever to appear in his popular "TV, Movie and Video Guide" (now simply "Movie Guide"): "Deranged 'remake' lacks action, humor and charm; Forget about comparisons to Johnny Weismuller; O'Keefe makes Elmo Lincoln seem like Edwin Booth."
