We don't know very much about Bertha McMurphy. We know she lived in the house later occupied by the Stone Mountain Farm in Maine a good long while ago.
We learned of her in November 1985 when an elderly couple from Sanford in a pickup truck drove up to the house and very bashfully asked if they could come in. The woman had apparently lived in the Klusics’ house (the “Inn") about 50 years ago. At that time she would come up across the open fields (now woods) to our house to visit Bertha McMurphy who lived here.
The name and the image struck my fancy and these very short stories are the result. No claim is made that anything in these stories is true. But it all could be.
They are best read out loud, and ideally no more than one or two per day. And you too can write Bertha McMurphy stories.
