General Details for 2026 Friday walks
Start time for walks: 10am (unless otherwise stated) at the start venue. May change if the weather is predicted hot.
Walk dates: Could change due to unsuitable weather, work commitments etc. Revised dates will be notified.
Refreshments: Please bring a drink and an energy snack along for ALL walks.
Clothing: Please wear suitable walking shoes or boots and dress for the weather.
Equipment: Walking poles might be useful for the “hills” and where the ground is uneven or muddy.
Terrain: Please plan for muddy sections on any of this year’s walks after heavy rainfall.
Walk Speed and Leadership: Walks follow simple routes to allow for the range of walking speeds. The walk leader will give some simple advice at the start of the walk to ensure the group does not get separated.
Pre-registration for walks : The walk leader will send an email out about a week before the walk with the final details of the walk and requesting confirmation of walkers attendance.
Travel to walk start point: Please make your own arrangements for getting to the walk start point, however if anyone needs a lift, the walk leader can help organise this. Walkers are encouraged to lift-share where possible.
Friday 10th April : Rampton to Northstowe
An early warm up 4 mile walk, easy, level and mainly on hard surfaces to the Northstowe lakes and back. Meet at 10am on Rampton Green What3words- blackbird.state.device.postcode CB24 8QB. Please bring snacks and drinks.
Friday 22 May : Coton Countryside Reserve
A figure of 8 walk, with gentle hills; loop 1 is a short 1.5 mile walk up the hill overlooking the shooting range and with great views towards Cambridge. Loop 2 is 2.5 miles and takes us to the edge of Coton, where we will stop for a decent break (please bring plenty of snacks and drinks) beside the church in the picturesque old village centre. Walkers can opt to do 1 or 2 loops or both loops, totalling 4 miles. Parking is at the Coton Countryside Reserve car park (south of Coton) what3words- ranch.throw.makes. Postcode CB23 7PY, on Grantchester Road. Meet at 10am in the car park for loop 1 and about 10.30am if you want the group to find you to walk the second loop.
Friday 26 June : Caxton
A 3.2 mile circular walk circumnavigating the village of Caxton with a gently rolling landscape and some beautiful buildings enroute. The route can be extended to 4.5 miles for those more adventurous, and the leader can direct those walkers that only want to do the short walk back to the start point, it is straightforward. Meet and park in the centre of Caxton, at 10am on Ermine Street, outside the Chubby Frog public house (which opens at noon). What3words- damp.pixies.greyhound. Postcode CB23 3PQ. Friday 10th July : Little Thetford
A 2.5 mile circular walk wildlife spotting along the Great Ouse at Little Thetford and enjoying views of Ely Cathedral. An option to extend the walk to 4.8 miles. Both parts of the walk are flat, however there are 2 stiles and the Railway line to cross on both routes. Meet at 10am by the yellow road-salt container on Holt Fen. (Main Rd in Little Thetford turns into Holt Fen a short distance before you get to the railway). What3words- overruns.louder.sprains. Postcode CB6 3HB. For those wishing to do both parts of the walk, please bring some picnic lunch and drinks.
Friday 7th August : Cambridge by the River Cam
A 4 to 5 mile leisurely linear and level easy walk along the River Cam travelling by bus from Cottenham to Histon Road. Walking down Castle Street to the river and either on to near the Green Dragon pub in Chesterton, returning back by the river or heading in the opposite direction along the backs past Queens college and joining the river at the Granta Pub. For lunch by the river, please bring a picnic and drinks. Start time to be determined based on bus times nearer the walk date. There are pubs and facilities in both directions.
Friday 4 September : Hardwick to Toft
A 4.5 mile circular challenging walk , with slopes and uneven ground for most of the route. Great views of the surrounding countryside. Meet at 10am at the south of Hardwick at the junction of Main Street and Portway Road and parking on Portway Road (Coming from the north, last turning on left ) what3words- dilute.bonkers.soups. Friday 9 October : Burrough Green
A 4.5 mile circular walk , with gentle hills for most of the route. A great mix of habitats and things to see as we will cross fields, woodland and stud farms on the way round. Meet at 10am and parking is by the Village Green Cricket practice net on Sherriffs Court (Coming from the north, 1st right past the pub., then 1st left) what3words- notion.wrenching.magnum.
