15.5 The Kiosk
The kiosk is the payment point and will be used for the storage of balls, clubs, hole markers and pin flags when the facility is not in use. The kiosk will also provide shelter for the attendant during short spells of bad weather.
The Design:
The form has been chosen to enhance the area. Essentially a cube with a pyramidal hipped roof is one that is commonly found and associated with seaside esplanades and indeed there have been small buildings and shelters with a similar form in earlier times at Prestwick esplanade. The sides are approximately 3.0m giving an external gross area footprint of 9.0m2. The kiosk has been designed and will be constructed to form a robust building to stand against the exposed climate of the site. To help to withstand potential vandalism all doors and windows will be protected by integrated recessed shutters for security.
Location: Planning agreed that the kiosk would be located ... adjacent to the esplanade, opposite the café and public WC facilities on the north side of Links Road, forming a cluster of facilities which will enhance the appeal of this area.
Use the previous location: This was about 80m to the south and can be seen on the above drawing. This was possibly appropriate when there were 4 putting greens as it was halfway. But being away from Links Rd it suffered badly from vandalism and for this reason was demolished. We certainly do not wish to repeat this mistake.
Kiosk is only required 13 weeks year: We considered hiring or buying a wooden shed and possibly reselling it each year. This putting green is for the long term and both these option would be more expensive and would not enhance the appeal of the area. However if we cannot raise sufficient cash we may need to resort to one of these approaches during the initial years.
