Building workplace experience progressively from Year 7 to Year 11
Work experience helps students understand what it is like to be part of a real workplace, explore different careers and sectors, develop employability skills and build confidence in interacting with employers.
At Ferryhill School, experiences of workplaces are developed progressively throughout
Years 7–11.
Meaningful workplace experiences help students understand:
what it is like to work in that environment • the skills employers value • how workplaces operate • recruitment and progression routes • what it takes to succeed
Students also have opportunities to complete relevant tasks, interact with employees, receive feedback and reflect on what they have learned.
Students take part in a range of meaningful employer-led workplace experiences designed to broaden their understanding of industries, careers and workplaces.
These may include workplace visits, employer projects and challenges, careers activities, employer-led tasks, Take Your Child to Work opportunities and other experiences that allow students to interact with people from the world of work.
The national model is for these activities to build towards one week’s worth of meaningful work-experience activity across Years 7–9. Most activities should involve direct, in-person engagement and, wherever practical, take place within workplaces.
Students progress to more immersive workplace experience.
At Ferryhill School, all Year 10 students take part in a one-week work-experience placement, giving them the opportunity to experience a real working environment, interact with employees and develop workplace knowledge, skills and behaviours.
The national expectation is for pupils to have one week’s worth of meaningful placement activity across Years 10–11. Placements may be completed with one or more employers and can be organised flexibly across the two years.
Year 10 Work Experience 2026–27
Monday 5 July – Friday 9 July 2027
YEAR 10 Work experience Monday 5th - Friday 9th July 2027
For many students, Year 10 work experience will be their most sustained experience of a workplace before leaving school.
Students should use the placement to:
experience working routines • develop communication and teamwork • practice workplace behaviours • learn about different job roles • ask questions • build confidence • explore whether a career or sector interests them
Students do not need to choose a placement that matches their eventual career. A placement can also help them discover what they do not want to do while developing transferable skills.
Students are encouraged to take an active role in identifying suitable placements.
Think about:
What sectors interest me?
What would I like to find out more about?
What skills would I like to develop?
How will I travel there?
Are the working hours suitable?
Could I contact an employer directly?
School will provide guidance and support throughout the process.
