LISBON, FLUL, 24 AND 26 SEPTEMBER 2012

Coord. Maria Leonor García da Cruz (CH/FLUL)

Public presentations and debates from 14:00 to 20:00 Lisbon time.

Videoconference online through the Colibri Platform connected to

Lisbon University, two working afternoons (since 13h30 Lisbon time). Obligatory way: ml.garciacruz@kanguru.pt

Objective:

The state of the art of research into specific issues within the scope of the overall topic of the research programme. Attention should be paid to the lack of clarity still existing in the historiography due to lack of research or due to alterations in historical situations which have not yet been analysed.

Topics for reflection:

- flowchart or overall scheme on the functioning of bodies (and entities) receiving taxes, rates and duties – departments, managers, officials, agents

- relationship with the application of justice (courts and other entities) related to men and actions concerning the collection of taxes, rates and duties – what still has to be studied?

- forms of registration – appointments, contracts, forms of payment, control of revenue and expenses, debt transactions, royal pardons, etc? – different viewpoints of analysis?

- forms of accountancy – diversity with progress?

- appointment of officials and the existence of social networks – up to what extent was there intervention by individuals and groups of power in the presentation of candidates to a post? Were posts bought and sold?

- Repercussions on the administrative management of finances and on government policy?

- Viewpoint of central management versus local management?

- times of social pressure? Motivations and solutions (religious problem, for example, existence of problematic minorities…)
