In the CSR book published by UTP Corporate Office, "A Gift of Hope", my innovation product for a simple and quick eye check was included as one of the contributions to the local community in Kampung Aji in Bota, Perak--a small and poor village near UTP campus. The Android mobile app was developed in order to provide an easy-to-use tool for CSR teams to perform quick eye examination of old folks who were staying alone, had very poor eyesight and didn't have the means to visit the clinics to get a proper eye check and get reading glass. With the app, CSR teams can either recommend a reading glass that you can buy at the pharmacy or to recommend for a further examination at the proper eye clinics. We would never think that such a simple task were impossibly difficult for those living under poverty and limited mobility with no children taking care of them. It was a way for us to give back to the local community. The product was initially developed as part of an undergraduate project by Mr Zen Ming and funded by UTP Idea Generation (i-Gen) Fund.

Media coverage on my medical device invention during the 27th International Invention Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2016) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center for the project titled "RETINO: Portable Diabetic Retinopathy Grading System". During the biggest annual innovation exposition in Malaysia, my team and I showcased the third generation medical apparatus developed at the Centre for Intelligent Signal and Imaging Research (CISIR) based on three patents (two awarded, one pending). Project members at the time were “Fawnizu Azmadi Hussin (main supervisor), Mohd Iqbal Saidon, Ahmad Fadzil Mohd Hani. This newspaper (News Straits Times) article talks about Retino and how it would enable quicker and non-invasive eye examination of diabetic patients without the dependency on the availability of expert ophthalmologists. Retino can be used by anyone, with minimal training. That's the beauty of it. The team at CISIR (under my lead) are working on further enhancement while at the same time, we are negotiating with potential companies who are interested to bring this to the market.

In this article which was published on the same day in Berita Harian (Malay language newspaper) talks about my invention, the portable diabetic retinopathy(DR) grading system, which is based on a portable Android device. This invention was patented in 2013 at MyIPO (Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia). I had pitched this invention during the Innovation Pitching session the day earlier, which was judged by the Malaysian Innovation Agency (AIM). This portable DR grading system enables quick and non-invasive method to diagnose and grade the severity level of DR, which is normally present in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. With the invention, it would be possible to conduct a nationwide screening of DR to the general population, because the invention would not require the expert ophthalmologists to be present to do the diagnosis and grading. During this pitching session, I presented an enhanced version of this invention, which makes it more portable and user friendly.
