28. Gold Medal in ITEX 2016
Gold medal was received for our project titled "RETINO: Portable Diabetic Retinopathy Grading System", an apparatus developed at the Centre for Intelligent Signal and Imaging Research (CISIR) based on three patents (two awarded, one pending). The picture below was taken during the 27th International Invention Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2016) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre with the programmer (Muhammad Iqbal Saidon) and Polytechnic Ungku Omar intern (Rayzal Ahmad Yaacob) who contributed to the development of this third generation prototype (photo in the NST newspaper article, from left Faheem (my son), Fawnizu (me), Iqbal, Rayzal (acting as the test subject)).

25. IEEE Circuits & Systems Region 10 Chapter-of-the-Year Award 2015
Date: May 2015 during ISCAS 2015 in Lisbon, Portugal
Description: This award is given annually to only one IEEE CAS chapter in the Asia Pacific region (Region 10), which is the most active. As the chair of IEEE CAS Malaysia chapter for two terms (2013 & 2014), my committee managed to secure the award for the fourth time. Malaysia chapter also received this award in 2011 and 2012.

Description: This award is given annually to only one IEEE CAS chapter in the Asia Pacific region (Region 10), which is the most active. As the chair of IEEE CAS Malaysia chapter for 2013, my committee received the award for the third time. Malaysia chapter also received this award in 2011 and 2012.

The commercial-ready portable device that can work in an Android tablet is able grade the severity level of Diabetic Retinopathy.

20. IEEE Circuits & Systems (Malaysia) Innovation Award 2014

Award-winning project: Train Track Misalignment Monitoring System

Description: In this undergraduate final year project (FYP), the team invented a prototype of vibration and acceleration detection system. During the testing phase, the prototype was mounted on the ETS train traveling from Batu Gajah to KL Sentral (and return). The collected data was analysed to detect locations where potential problems on the track can be located. The prototype is based on an Arduino board, which is integrated with sensors.

Description: In this undergraduate engineering team project (ETP), the team invented a prototype of an environmental measurement device (air temperature and humidity) that can recommend suitable temperature (and relative humidity) for optimum comfort while also being energy efficient.

For the first six months at the English Institute, I had the opportunity to live with two American families (Bohanans and Gunters) as my host families. During the stay, my written and spoken English improved tremendously. I miss the Bohanan boys, Zack and Kyle.
