Hey there!
We are the Student Research Forum (SRF) of School of Life Sciences. What do we do, you ask?
Once every week, we hold really cool talks or documentary screenings on anything science in a session called 'Just Somethings'. Check out the posters and summaries of all the talks we held until now in 'Just Somethings' section. We also do other crazy things like hosting quizzes, meme contests, discussions, plays (literally anything to get people talking about science)!
aka Pale Blue Dot – We have a nick name - Pale Blue Dot, named after a book by Carl Sagan. In the book, Carl Sagan describes the image of “mote of” earth taken by Voyager 1 from a distance of 6 billion kilometres from earth. Using this image he points out the importance for us to have humility towards ourselves and the earth we live in. For us (members of SRF), this 'Pale Blue Dot' signifies the entirety of the knowledge acquired by Homo sapiens . This vast information we have is still a speck in the entire universe of knowledge and there is a lot more to be explored.
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilisation, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."
~Pale Blue Dot, Carl Sagan
HUMAN LIBRARY!
On Science day (28th February 2019 ), we put up a play depicting life and achievements of 5 researchers! The researchers we included were Sushruta (played by Bilal, BSc 1st year), Bhaskara II (by Achyut kumar, Mc 1st year), Jahangir (by Yash Goel, Bsc 2nd year), Janaki Ammal (by Chandini, Msc 1st year) and Rajeshwari Chatterjee (by Pallavi, sc 1st year). All these people lived in very different centuries - 6th century BCE to 21st century CE.
It was an incredible experience putting up this play for kids and seeing them engrossed in the lives of these researchers. We would like to thank Mahek (BSc 1st year), Snigdha (BSc 1st year), Esther Renita (MSc 1st year) and Dinesh Reghunathan (Research scholar) for their help in setting up the play.
Hey Bookworms!
We've all turned to the college library when we're in a pinch, memorising pages of animal classifications and biochemical pathways. But where can we read the first-hand experiences of James Watson in discovering the structure of DNA (Double Helix), or the passionate arguments of Richard Dawkins (The Selfish Gene)? Look no further than the SOLS bookshelves! We have added a collection of science books to our library. You can now borrow them for Rs.10 per week per book.
It would be amazing if you could lend your book(s) to this collection too. The books can be from any field of science.
Contact Geethanjali ma'am (9740437004) to borrow or lend books.
Happy reading!
