School of Life Sciences celebrated Onam on 31st August 2018 with great fanfare and enthusiasm from the students and staff. Around 15 students created a lovely pookalam, laughing, bickering, and crooning to Malayalam songs as they arranged fresh flowers from Udupi flower market into intricate designs. The next day, SOLS was spotted with the white and gold of Kerala Kasavu saree and mundus, as students from all over India donned traditional attire to celebrate together. Feasting on payasam and taking countless pictures in front of the pookalam, the spirit of Onam visited SOLS and united Keralites and non-Keralites alike.
Onam is Kerala's 10 day harvest festival, celebrating the homecoming of the beloved King Mahabali. Steeped in rich culture and tradition, Onam festivities include making elaborate pookalams, a grand procession called pakalpooran, serving a feast (onasadhya) on banana leaves, dancing, boat racing, playing games (onakalikal), and adorning traditional clothes like Kasavu sarees and mundus. Onam also marks the beginning of the new year in Kerala, and the arrival of the harvest. It signifies prosperity and health, and in the wake of the recent Kerala floods, an opportunity for new beginnings and re-creation.
Happy Onam!
SOLS wishes all of you a happy and prosperous Onam!
To celebrate this festival, we will be distributing payasam tomorrow, 31st August. There will also be a splendid pookalam displayed in the basement.
We request that all students, research scholars, teachers, and staff wear ethnic clothes (saris, mundu, kurtas) tomorrow, and join the festivities!
