Mobile, & Gaming Technologies in ONLE
Goals
Discuss and learn Mobile, & Gaming technologies.
Instructor's Notes
In this lesson we will explore Mobile, & Gaming technologies. Remember to apply Connectivism theory to assist us to analyze Mobile, Immersive, & gaming technologies. Do not forget we need to think from the "environment" level.
Mobile learning is an emerging instructional technology and it has been overlooked. With better, more capable, less expensive mobile phones available, as educational technology experts, we need to have a good understanding of how mobile learning may impact and support network learning environments.
Gaming has become important to ONLE. Most people think gaming is referred to computer or video gaming. This is not necessarily true. In this lesson, we need to learn the key concepts of game-based learning or gaming. Watch the TED videos, if needed, on game-based learning and to focus on the key concepts that the speakers discussed. Priebatsch's different dynamics are critical, Appointment dynamics, Influence & Status, Progression Dynamics, etc. Or Chatfield's seven key elements of gaming to increase individual and collective engagements. Be sure to distinguish game-based learning from "gamification." They are related to each other but not the same.
I hope that, at this point, you have a good understanding of ONLE and PLE. If you are still not clear with the philosophy and the concept of Connectivism, and ONLE, you should go over our readings from previous lessons and/or do additional reading on the topics.

Highly recommended to address this key question, if you are interested in further expanding your knowledge.
Gaming in education has two major areas: Game-based Learning & Gamification. They are NOT the same but related to each other.
