Publishing Papers: Three goals

When I write papers I try to achieve three goals:

1. learn. Writing a paper requires extensive, rigorous research and discipline. Each of my published papers began with research into areas where I was a 'novice' requiring deeper knowledge. How can you not learn by writing?

2. teach. Try to teach enough to guide a 'novice' reader but not enough to empower the 'worthy' competitor.

3. promote. Let's face it, we're promoting our selves, our companies our philosophies.
