This fall, we are going to be starting the year off with stories about monsters and myths. We will read from Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths by Bernard Evslin as well as the myth of Medusa. In addition, we will read the short story, "The Vampyre" by Polidori, and we will end this unit by reading Beowulf.
While reading, you will be asked to think about what makes something a myth. We will also begin talking about why Gods, monsters, and vampire stories are so prevalent in our society as well as what they mean for each society. Why did people fear the Gods, Vampires, and Monsters? What fears are these stories really about? What makes them so terrifying to people? The tales also question if monsters are born or created. I hope you're all ready to be scared!
