Winning:
The Overlord wins by killing all other players.
Losing:
The Overlord loses if they are killed or if another role achieves victory.
This is an unofficial role created by fans of of the game. Although it is not official it has been made into physical cards and has seen some spread in the community.
The Overlord, a powerful role with godlike abilities, has a unique position in the game. Much like the King, the Overlord reveals their role at the start of the game and chooses their general only after seeing who all the other players are. The Overlord's goal is to eliminate all other players, either directly or indirectly, to claim victory.
Choosing the General:
The Overlord chooses their general after all other players have selected and revealed theirs. While the rules suggest that the Overlord should choose from god characters, this is flexible. To balance the game, some groups allow the Overlord to select from a broader set of options and increase the Overlord’s maximum health by one for additional competitiveness.
Killing Opponents:
Whenever the Overlord kills another player, they immediately draw two cards, regardless of that player's role (even if the victim is a Rebel). This mechanic rewards the Overlord for aggressive play.
Becoming the King:
The Overlord has the ability to kill the King before all other players are dead. In this case, the game does not end. Instead, the Overlord becomes the new King, and all remaining players are considered Rebels. The game continues from that point with this new dynamic.
Punishment and Rewards:
If any player kills the Overlord, they draw four cards as a reward for their accomplishment. Conversely, if a player heals the Overlord when they are on the brink of death, that player draws two cards as a reward for their assistance.
Game End:
The Overlord can only lose if they are killed or if another player wins first. The most common way this happens is if the King is killed by someone else, in which case the Rebels would win. The Overlord must ensure they survive and prevent others from achieving their victory conditions.
Powerful Role:
As the Overlord, you have access to godlike abilities and an elevated position in the game. Your strength lies in your ability to adapt, as you can see all other generals before selecting your own. This gives you the opportunity to counter opponents effectively.
Aggressive Playstyle:
Since you can gain cards by killing other players, you are encouraged to take an aggressive approach. Weigh the risks and rewards carefully, but don’t be afraid to take bold moves to eliminate opponents.
Long-Term Game Plan:
If you manage to kill the King, the game doesn't end but shifts into a new phase where you become the King and everyone else becomes a Rebel. This change can give you the upper hand if you’ve prepared for it and weakened your remaining opponents.
Be Prepared for Attention:
Since players are rewarded with four cards for killing you, they will likely target you once they perceive you as a threat. Plan your moves carefully, and be cautious of players trying to take advantage of your weakened state.
Collaboration and Deception:
If you’re on the brink of death, another player may heal you for their own gain, drawing two cards in the process. Use this to your advantage and manipulate other players into helping you stay alive, only to turn against them later.
The Overlord role is for players who enjoy a powerful, aggressive playstyle and who are able to adapt to shifting dynamics in the game. With godlike abilities, the ability to become the King, and the incentive to take risks, the Overlord is a formidable role with high-stakes gameplay.
