In Sanguosha, many cards and abilities are restricted by range, meaning they can only be used on players within a certain distance. Understanding how range works is essential for both attacking and using strategic abilities.
There are two closely related but distinct types of range used in the game: Range and Attacking Range. While they may seem similar at first, each is used in different situations, and certain abilities or equipment will reference one specifically.
Range refers to the general concept of how far away you can interact with another player based on table position.
Attacking Range refers specifically to how far away you can attack, and is determined by the weapon you have equipped (if any).
The difference between these two becomes especially important when weapons, Horses, and character abilities come into play, as each can affect only one type or both in specific ways. The following sections will explain each type in more detail.
Range represents your character’s physical reach—how far away other players can be for you to affect them with certain cards or abilities. This type of range is used for more complex interactions that aren’t direct attacks.
Some character abilities, such as Wei Yan’s, are limited by this Range. The most common use of this type is with cards like Steal and Starvation, which can only be used on players within your Range.
By default, each player has a Range of 1. This value is fixed and is not affected by weapons you may have equipped. Only certain character abilities can change how far your Range can reach.
Attacking Range is the reach of your weapon—how far away you can launch attacks against other players. This range determines who you can target with Attack cards and other combat-related abilities.
Several characters rely on Attacking Range for their abilities, such as Dian Wei, Xun Yu, and Jiang Wei. The most common use of Attacking Range is to determine which players you can target with an Attack. If a player is beyond your Attacking Range, you cannot target them with this type of card or ability.
By default, every character begins the game with an Attacking Range of 1. Equipping a weapon will change this range. Each weapon has its own range value, and once equipped, that range replaces your default value, becoming your new Attacking Range. For example, if you equip a weapon with a range of 3, you can now attack players who are up to 3 spaces away.
While Horses do not directly increase a character’s Range or Attacking Range, they do affect distance calculations, which can indirectly determine who is within reach. A -1 Horse makes all other players effectively one space closer when you are calculating distance, allowing you to potentially bring more players into your Attacking Range. A +1 Horse makes you appear one space farther away when others are calculating distance to you, making it harder for them to reach you with attacks or certain abilities.
This means that if the actual distance between two players is adjusted—thanks to a Horse—so that one falls within the other's Attacking Range, then the attack becomes possible, even though neither player's actual range value has changed.
