Vaikasi Visakam is said to be the day when Lord Muruga / Subramanya was born into this world with the mission of saving earth from demons like Soorapadman. Valli Kalyanam is also celebrated on Vaikasi Visakam day. It is said that Lord Skanda married to Sri Valli on this day.
Vaikasi Visakam is a grand festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu which marks the first appearance day of Lord Muruga who is also known as Subramanya or Shanmuga. It is celebrated on Visakam Nakshatram day in Vaikasi masam or Vaikasi month in Tamil Panchangam. Vaikasi Visakam is observed in a grand manner in all Murugan temples across the world.
Pulling of chariots festival is organized on the day. On the day, devotees take out procession carrying milk pots to Subrahmanya temples. The milk is used for the abhishekam of the deity. Some devotees also take kaavadi on the day. Thousands of devotees visit Lord Muruga shrine on Vaikasi Visakam. Prayers that are chanted on the day include Kanda Sashti Kavacham, Subrahmanya Bhujangam and Shanmukha Kavacham.
Vaikasi Visakam is celebrated since 2001 in Michigan at Parasakthi Temple, Pontiac to commemorate the birthday of Lord Muruga/Subramanya/Karthikeya.
