Traveling to Conferences

Tips

    • Book Flights through Emory. They don't like to reimburse flights you buy on your own.
    • Apply for Funding Beforehand There is money budgeted for you, use it. Read descriptions about what to apply for. If the thing you're attending is called a "Workshop" or "School," you're going to have to apply for training funding. They take a little writing and claim to assist you in future grant applications...Just go with it, the money's worth it.

    • Two of my approved proposals, 2015AWSProposal2.pdf and 2015BootcampProposal.pdf
    • A sample proposal provided to me by the PDS office, SampleProposal.pdf

Jay Hughes, the PDS department, is willing to read through your proposal and return it with comments before you submit it. I highly recommend taking advantage of this because everything is quicker when approved the first time around.

Here is a summary of some of the comments I have received.

    • Use the fancy words to make them think you're doing things that matter but don't use them so often that they don't understand anything.
    • Include specific details about what the conference is and how it applies to you.
    • Saying things like "I will work hard to impress those who may hire me next year" receives the comment "how?" (You might want to respond by saying "I WILL WORK HARD" but instead you should say "by proving results on K3 Surfaces" but actually you will probably not say K3 surfaces.
