Abstract: As an engineer, your success depends on your ability to persuade others that your work is important and accurate. You also have to explain complex concepts and research results to a variety of audiences: colleagues, contractors, policy makers, and the public. In this seminar we will identify and discuss the features of successful technical presentations. Dr. Volz will provide tips on how to organize a coherent argument, project a positive ethos, and handle questions.

Biography of Tracy Volz:

Tracy Volz is a senior lecturer in professional communication in the Brown School of Engineering at Rice University. For the past 10 years, she has supported written, oral, and visual communication instruction. In addition to working with faculty and students, Dr. Volz has coached executives and conducted communication seminars for the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, universities, and corporations. Dr. Volz holds a Ph.D. in English from Rice University and a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa.
