The packages presented below can be used to easily create a character in Plumb, using the Spelunk character creation rules - each package costs its listed value in points, and only one package may be taken. They may be further edited to tailor any particular character, again by the adding and subtracting of character-creation points; you may have a Koopa who can swim decently, or a nearsighted Goomba, or a Bob-Omb immune to fire.
The Goomba is a short, brown mushroom-person, with no arms and stubby feet. Although many have been in the infantry of less-than-victorious armies, not all Goombas mindlessly march towards their doom for evil kingdoms. Many Goombas in the mushroom kingdom are peaceful enough folk, with a mind for scholarly investigations and learning. Often, those Goombas that seek out adventure do so because they can learn something new from the experience, while experiencing the thrill of life on the edge.
The standard Goomba attack is a full-body (+1) tackle, which can only work in the cardinal directions (-2) and has a range of 2 (+1). Despite not having arms, they seem to be able to handle tools and things well enough, and are often quite intelligent; they're better than average at spotting inconsistencies (+1 Spot), but are often a little too thorough when they know their life could depend on it (-1 Slow Trap Search). They can jump reasonably high compared to many Mushroom Kingdom inhabitants (+1 Jump).
The Koopa is a bipedal turtle, with a shell on its back that serves as both clothing and status symbol - the shell can be removed at will (or by force!), and many Koopas believe that you can learn a lot about another Koopa by the state of their shell; a few Koopa forego using their shell at all, focusing instead on the arts of magic. When faced with danger, Koopas charge right in, and are quick on their toes, if not on their feet. At home, they then to lead pastoral, simple lives, in villages far from the bustle of city life.
Koopas are well-rounded warriors. Their shells provide an extra resistance against damage (+2 Resist), but this very shell makes it difficult to swim (-1 Sinks), and if they are attacked from above, there is a very good chance that they will be stunned (-2 Weak to Air/Jump). Their favorite attack is the Koopa Tackle (see Techniques, +3). Both the Resist bonus and the Shell Attack are unavailable if the Koopa's shell is removed. Koopas are also known to use a wide array of weapons, armor, and other war-making tools, a perennial favorite being the Throwing Hammer.
Toads look very much like humans, but are shorter, stouter, and have bulbous, mushroom-like heads covered in spots. They've lived in the Mushroom Kingdom since ancient times, and used to be its sole inhabitant race; as of late, they've been very accepting of other races, and now lead very cosmopolitan lives, enjoying the fruits of many cultures near and far. Toads are also excessively peaceful folk, to the point where they seem unable to participate in any fight - danger causes most Toads to flee first, and cower second.
Still, for the occasional brave Toad who decides to join in the fray, there is yet hope - Toads are surprisingly athletic for their peaceful, largely sedentary lives. They can both flee from battle and charge into it faster than many Mushroom Kingdom inhabitants (+1 Move), though they generally prefer to keep back and use ranged attacks, ranging from spears to vegetables fresh from the ground. This preference for ranged combat leverages their greatest strength, the ability to lift heavy things (+2 Lift).
Yoshi are sentient dinosaur people from a southern tropical island, and come in a variety of colors, but all have an amazingly dexterous tongue. They use this tongue to eat far-away prey, and are capable of digesting almost anything instantly. They can learn to speak to other Mushroom Kingdom races, but it takes time; not all Yoshis can, and many only know the word "Yoshi". Legend has it that Yoshis can gain various magical powers based on what they eat, or what they hold in their mouths...
Yoshi move very fast (+2 Move) and can carry another normal-sized being (such as a human, Toad, or with training, a Koopa) on their back without trouble (+1 Mount, +2 Lift). Though they have hands, they are small, and not well-suited to manipulating complex objects that they are unfamiliar with (-2 Slow Open, -2 Slow Use), or for swimming (-1 Sinks). Their tongue is their preferred weapon, with a little range (+1) and ability to curve (+1), can pull enemies in (+1) and will often stun them (+4 Stun Hazard); there may be a way to learn how to Lift an enemy immediately and instantly after stunning it. The sticky tongue will latch onto the first thing it touches, though, friend or foe alike (-3). Yoshi are also known to have other, more esoteric abilities, often (but not always!) used in conjunction with eating an enemy, that vary from Yoshi to Yoshi.
Bob-Ombs are small, walking, talking, sentient explosives. Much like Goombas in size, they too can work with tools despite not having hands; their engineering skill is known far and wide. They are also known to explode when angry, or in a fight, or whenever the mood suits them - for Bob-Ombs, exploding is a way of letting off steam, and causes them no harm whatsoever. Bob-Ombs are sometimes feared by others, though, because of their innate destructive ability, and many are still looking for a good home in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Almost all Bob-Ombs are skilled with technology (+2 Use). All Bob-Ombs are capable of self-destructing, exploding in an impressive fashion (+6 area, affecting each tile in all four directions, +5 damage, +1 Strike Synergy), but first their fuse must be lit - they cannot explode without some kind of time elapsing (-4 Slow). As such, Bob-Ombs are not at all waterproof, and extensive exposure to water will damage them. (-1 Hates Water, -1 Sinks, -2 Weak to Water). They are also known to be lit against their will by fire attacks, causing their signature explosion attack to be begun in a decidedly non-tactical manner (-1); however, Bob-Ombs are somehow able to control their explosions, even when lit against their will, so that their friends and allies suffer no damage from them, while enemies and structures in need of a good explosion suffer extensive damage.
Boos are the ghosts of long-past Mushroom Kingdom residents, still on the mortal plane for one reason or another. Most Boos are painfully shy, turning away whenever someone looks at their face; those Boos brave enough to leave their dark homes are usually brave enough to be looked upon. Since they are no longer bound by physical bodies, they can float freely through the air, and even pass through solid objects when they put their mind to it! Note, though, that Boos can still be harmed in the usual ways - and no one knows what happens when a Boo is defeated...
A Boo is able to go higher in a single Jump action than most Mushroom Kingdom residents (+2 Jump), and they can continue climbing higher when in the air (+4 Mid-Air Jump). They also fall slower than truly solid objects (+2 Floaty). Being semi-insubstantial, though, it takes a lot of time to get a grip on delicate or sensitive things (-2 Slow Use, -2 Slow Open). To pass through solid objects - but not enemies! - a Boo must expend 3 FP, to move forward 2 squares. If they hit an enemy along the way, that foe feels a chill that inflicts the Boo's basic Strike in damage, and the Boo comes to an immediate halt. (Bodily +1, Range +1, Pass-Through +3, FP Dependant -3)
