What is #edsg? How did it start? What has this ground-up community achieved in the last two years of its existence? In this session, we look back at how #edsg was started, and consider how it has grown and evolved ever since its inception by 2 teachers (@tucksoon and @shamsensei) who met online and felt that Singapore needed a space on Twitter to discuss topics related to education. During ICTLT 2012, #edsg was still in its infancy, and now, at ICTLT 2014, it has, against all odds, become a community with an annual tweet-up and followers from overseas. #edsg has been shared at different formal and informal platforms. At heart, it is still very much driven by educators who participate in the discussions just for the sheer enjoyment they get out of picking each other's brains, agreeing to disagree, and thinking through different issues together.

What drives individuals from various sections of Singapore's education landscape to join in the weekly conversations on Twitter? (We'll go 'live' on #edsg at this point)

What discussions have there been on #edsg? Refer to Twitter Resources.

How can you join #edsg? Set aside Tuesdays, 9-10 pm (Singapore time) in your calendar as Twitter Time! If you do not know how to use Twitter, refer to Twitter Resources.

Abstract:

With the advent of social media, there is opportunity for learning anytime, anywhere. In this paper , we document the growth of #edsg, the first weekly Twitter chat on education in Singapore that has leveraged the affordances of social media for teacher professional development through rich conversations on a wide variety of topics. #edsg is a ground-up initiative that grew out of two teachers’ passion for the use of social media in teacher professional development and which has garnered interest across institutions and countries. Over the span of one year, the weekly #edsg chats have attracted numerous educators and individuals interested in education and have trended nationally on several occasions. Through the use of a qualitative survey and interviews with regular participants of #edsg, we delve into the advantages, disadvantages, perceptions and sustainability of using social media as a teacher professional development tool as well as discuss some of the success factors and foreseeable challenges of #edsg.
