As individuals mature, they move through increasingly sophisticated stages of moral development. Individuals with higher levels of moral development should exhibit improved moral judgement.
Erikson's Psychological Stages (Erikson, 1950, 1963)
Erikson proposed a lifespan model of human development progressing through five stages up to the age of 18 years, and through three additional stages well into adulthood. is "Theory of Human Motivation". At each stage, he describes a psychological crisis:
Social Development Theory (Vygotsky, 1978)
Vygotsky proposed that social interaction plays a fundamental role in the development of human cognition. Functions in our cultural development appear twice: interpsychologically, and then intrapsychologically.
A sub theory of the Social Development Theory proposes that the human development depends on the "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD) - a level that children can perform with some assistance form an experienced peer or an adult.
