2010 Archives

Christmas & New Years with the fam || December 22-January 3 (not 2nd) || I got to catch up with the whole family in Kansas City, enjoying a delicious Christmas Eve dinner and some caroling. The KC portion of the trip also included some very memorable nights on the Plaza and the PHS XC reunion run. The trip-within-a-trip was to Florida to see Dad's family there. The running, golf and salad bowl (official rules here, and I'd recommend reading them carefully) were so much fun.

Thanksgiving in Kansas City || November 23-28, 2010 || A quick trip to Kansas City saw a cousins reunion with David and the attempts at a family Christmas card picture. Of course the cat was involved in the worst picture. And the night-time picture in front of the tree was followed shortly by Dad running Matrix-style through the Crown Center fountain.

The move to the new apartment || This isn't strictly an "event" but, hour-for-hour, it took about as much time as anything else in the season. The hill presented it's own challenges with the materials from Cole Valley Hardware, but it's totally worth it.

Head of the Charles || October 23, 2010 || An 18-hour swing to Boston was full of action, from Helen and the Hamilton women's crew team taking 4th in the Saturday fours, to midnight pumpkin carving and clowns in bars (don't ask). Pictures

Kansas City Marathon || October 16, 2010 || August and I came back with the goals to 1) stay on course, 2) win. We accomplished both with the help of our wheelpeople, Becca and Dad.

Chicago Trip || September 10-13, 2010 || The start of the season of family visits. Maggie and I had a great time walking about, seeing Chicago traditions Second City and The White Sox (unbelievably, the Kansas City Royals won) and enjoying that other Chicago traditions, deep-dish pizza.Hood to Coast || August 27-28, 2010 || Google1 overcame some last-minute roster changes to win the corporate division for the first time at Hood to Coast. Even short-handed, we fielded one of our deepest teams yet. The weekend was perfect for running and for catching up with everyone. The fourth leg was a real 7.7-mile treat, but less gravel than #2, thank goodness. Team Blog || My photos || Results || Leg 1 || Leg 2 || Leg 3 || Leg 4

Skaneateles Trip || August 27-28, 2010 || Another whirlwind trip back east. It was great to catch up with Kerry and Chris and folks in the New York office. The roadtrip upstate felt downright midwestern and, while the weather didn't cooperate on Sunday, we had some excellent sailing and it was wonderful to see Dad and Uncle Paul.

Trip to Crag o' Loch & Kansas City || June 17-21, 2010 || The occasion of Mom's birthday and Father's Day combined to herald a weekend just as I remember Crag. Golf (both miniature & links), shuffleboard, running and home cooking were capped off by the water activities on The Dagny, waterskiing, cliff-jumping and waveboarding on a kneeboard (who knew it was possible?). Ragnar Relay New York || May 14-15, 2010 || 2 weeks removed from Calistoga, Google1 headed to the Hudson Valley in New York to run 185 miles from Woodstock to Dobbs' Ferry. The team was a mix of offices and experiences, but this race has become one of our favorites. The scenery en route is gorgeous, and while the rolling hills of upstate New York should not be underestimated, the finish into Dobbs' Ferry and the fun night with the team in New York made the weekend a perfect birthday trip. Calistoga to Davenport Relay || May 1-2, 2010 || Google1 was the talk of the course, defending our three-peat with a newly-assembled team. We had great weather (making up for last year), but the course hasn't gotten any easier. The legs I covered are those trod by our harriers of the past, and I tried to do them justice. Combine this with a great showing from our other 11 runners and you have the makings of a Google dynasty. JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge World Finals || February 26-March 9, 2010 || South Africa || The Google team joined 144 other runners, travelling 10,247 miles to Johannesburg, South Africa for the finals of the Corporate Challenge. We defended our '09 second place finish in Johannesburg, but the trip had so many highlights: running after the wildebeasts in Kruger National Park, touring the Soweto township and climbing Table Mountain among them. and, in a highlight of the trip, the Google1 team gets into a persistence hunt:

Skiing with Mom & Dad || February 18-21, 2010 || Alta, UT || Inspired by some amazing performance from the US alpine ski team in Vancouver, half of the family lit up the slopes of Alta. Great conditions + new snow + no snowboarders + great company = this video:
