Year 202
'Dantopia' Feshkikrost
Always read the fine print. Just some free advice for you. When I signed the contract to work for SenorOcho's expedition for a year, I should have read the whole thing. Apparently, after my year of service, I'm now somehow qualified to run the whole show. ~sigh~ Well, fine. Guess I'll take the reins myself for a year, and hopefully this place won't fall apart before I hand this off to the next guy.
First off, I guess we'll get some more rooms built. Never know when more 'help' is going to show up.
Also, we seem to have no military. Well, some of our...less than useful personnel is now a makeshift military. We'll train them in wrestling, since for one, I don't feel like making weapons, and for two, injuries taken during wrestling training aren't likely to be as lethal as other fighting styles.
We're going to tunnel out a new area for some sort of training room. We'll make it near the entrance so if trouble shows up, the wrestlers can go straight from training to application.
We seem to be good for food and drink right now, but I order some new booze at the still just to be sure.
After giving orders to a bunch of dwarves, I sit back and think on what else we need...
The lone miner who picked up the job struggles with his new workload. He keeps whining that I gave him too much to do. I remind him that the alternative is to join our new military. He seems very happy to work now.
The miner somehow convinced 2 of his friends to help him out! I think I know who's gonna be in charge next year!
Found a network of tunnels underneath the main colony. Tunnels and magma. I definitely see evidence of a gold vein, ready to plunder, but it's right next to a magma flow. SenorOcho's reports state that the only person who could use the magma, instantly died in it when it was uncovered. Yeah, just gonna leave all that alone for now.
We struck Native Aluminum! Excellent!
Also, an elven caravan's arrived. We'll see if they want to be useful, or if they just want to whine about us cutting down trees.
Well, the soldiers are sparring...just not in the Armor Stand barracks room I made...
Oh well, so long as they get better, I'm happy.
Ok, I just can't freaking stand it anymore. There's baby animals all over the place. Puppies and horse foals...they're noisy, smelly and get in the way all the time. Well, time to increase the food stores. The butcher/woodsdwarf/possible-murderer seems more than happy that he has a bunch of baby animals to go kill.
Apartments are coming along fine. We're just about done furnishing them too. Spacious and clean, and far enough away from anything loud and obnoxious.
Our military recruits are now using the new sparring room I've had built. They're getting pretty good, and we haven't had any nasty injuries yet. That's a success in my book!
Zulban's requiring an office, even though he's currently training to be a wrestler...have to build one at some point...also, immigrants showed up...a whole lot of 'em...we're hollowing out a new area for more apartments...I only hope we'll get it done before people start to complain...our colony is now quite populated with 35 dwarves.
I've made myself a modest bedroom, adjacent to SenorOcho's. I'm sure no one will have a problem with this decision. After all, being in charge is a difficult job.
We've recruited another round of peasants to the military. Again, going with wrestlers. Any threat to our growing colony will have all their bones broken. By 8 freakishly burly dwarves. All at once.
New apartments are nearly done, and you can see Zulban's little office in the lower-right of the apartment complex...once beds and doors have all been placed, the military dwarves are going back to training.
We've finally got the animal population down to reasonable numbers. Horse meat burritos and dog meat quesadillas are a new delicacy in our colony. Even the 3 kids that showed up with the last wave of immigrants seem to like them. Well, if people keep eating them, we'll keep making them.
Someone let something rot in the dining room area, and it quickly filled with the foulest odor I have ever smelled. I'm working on constructing a new dining room in the event that one is...unavailable.
The new dining room has gotten finished just in time for the first day of summer! Many Horse-rritos and Dog-adillas are eaten in celebration.
Olin Volaltosid, a rather foppish soap maker, has god mad! He took over a craftdwarf's workshop, and has begun building something strange...I guess all this time spent underground, with our growing miasma problem, pushed him over the edge.
To help our growing problem of foul odor, we've moved the butchery and sealed it with a network of doors. The chances of all 4 being open at once, and assaulting us with the stench of dead dog and horse, seems rather slim now.
A human caravan has arrived. Hopefully, the mad soapmaker will keep to himself. Don't need him rushing out and scaring potential trade partners away.
The idiot soapmaker finally showed off his 'masterpiece'. A scepter named Bungekiseth. If you're thinking this sounds a bit like Bung-Kisser, you're right. After hitting Olin repeatedly with his own creation, I sent him off to go haul furniture.
We traded a caravan's worth of assorted Obsidian crafts (of which we have an absurd amount) away to the human caravan. In return, we got all sorts of interesting boozes, leathers and meats. Some nicely made barrels too. Looks like we'll be eating more than just Horse-rritos and Dog-adillas!
Finally got around to assigning rooms to everyone. Found out we had a couple of married couples staying with us. Minkot and Oddam are now sharing a room, as are Obok and Datan. Currently we have our entire population of 35 dwarves roomed, with 12 empty rooms waiting for new arrivals on the right hand side of the apartments. Our food stores are doing excellently at around 900 units, while our booze supply stays steady at around 400.
Our wrestlers continue to constantly train. They're really beefing up! We've got a few elite wrestlers now, and Kogan has become a legendary champion! I pity anyone who decides that we would be a good target for their aggressions.
I sent the Axedwarf/Butcherdwarf/Murdererdwarf out to fell more trees...we've been building so many beds and barrels lately, that our wood supply has dwindled. Kosoth kept skirting his duties though...it seems he'd rather stay inside, butchering small animals that the trappers keep catching. It took some convincing (and some whacks to the head with the scepter Bungekiseth) to get him to go outside and chop trees. Crazy bastard...
Seeing as we got more than 20 immigrants last spring, I think now is a good time to expand the apartments a little more – just to be on the safe side.
Our wrestlers have become so good, that's all they want to do now. Looking through their ranks, I've found that our main broker/bookkeeper is amongst their ranks. I'll need to refill the position for now...our resident Potash maker will fill the vacancy nicely.
All of our wrestlers are now legendary champions! Both of the Zulbans still insist on being called by their former job titles for some reason. So long as the can break bones as easily as a wrapper on a Horse-rrito, they can call themselves whatever the heck they want.
I've ordered a stone cabinet to be placed in each room that is currently assigned to a dwarf. This will help our fellow dwarves feel a little more at home, while giving the overseer an easy way to see which rooms have been assigned, and which are currently awaiting occupancy.
The grand champion wrestlers are now assigned permanent patrol of our main entrance. Why waste time and effort on a gate, when anyone wishing to assault our colony must face off against the most muscle bound dwarves this land has every seen? The first strangers to meet our defenses was a caravan, who was suitably impressed with our giant freak dwarves guarding the front.
Traded away more of those stupid obsidian trinkets that seem to pile up, and got some more booze and assorted meats. We'll have no problem staying in for the winter, with a thousand units of food, and 700 units of booze! Even if the next immigration doubles our numbers, we'll be set for food and shelter.
Hooray! One of our horses gave birth to a foal, and one of the dogs gave us a small litter of puppies! Horse-rritos and Dog-adillas for everyone!
We've doubled our food stockpiles, in order to keep up with our planters, brewers and butchers. More wood's been cut down too, so we can make barrels to store all this stuff in.
Moved the craftdwarf's workshops next to the finished goods stockpiles. The less our dwarves need to waste energy on moving trinkets around, the better! The obsidian trinkets seem to be worth enough to keep making, so I let our resident trinket makers make as much as they want.
I've spiced up our entrance with some nice obsidian statues, and also have in the works a plan to smooth all the floors from outdoors to the trade depot, (yes, I know this will likely take a very long time) to give the caravans an easier time of getting goods to us.
Well, great – our main mason, Ast, has been struck by a strange mood, and is now taken over a masonry workshop to work on her project. Hope it's better than the stupid scepter called Bungekiseth. Although, to be fair, Bungekiseth has been a perfect tool to motivate lazy workers...
Dug out a couple of rooms near the trade depot to deposit both gems and coins (and material for coins). While we have no one interested in refining either gems or precious metals, the nuggets and rough gems should demand an adequate amount in trade goods by themselves.
It's the first day of winter...we shall now see if my preparations pay off! The first Horse-rritos and Dog-adillas are passed around the dining room where everyone likes to hang out in to stay warm.
Still awaiting Ast's mysterious construction..she's taking her sweet time at it. Food and drink stores remain very high, and the new gem and precious metal stockpiles are slowly filling. The obsidian trinkets are filling up the finished goods stockpiles as well...we'll be more than ready for the next caravan!
Ast is still working on her project. Maybe we'll see what it is by the end of the year. Also, working on deforesting the eastern forests. We keep running out of barrels.
Ast is STILL at work on her secret project! I'm honestly a little worried. I don't think I've seen her eat or sleep since starting, and that was more than a month ago! Well, if she dies working on this stupid thing, at least it will free up the workshop.
Ast's endless work continues. I think she may be an automaton at this point. Expanded the precious metal storeroom a bit, and we're sending miners to carefully explore the gold vein found underneath our colony.
Oh gods help us! Ast has gone insane! She's running around, berserk, threatening everyone who gets near! Everyone, RUN! GUARDS! GUARDS!
Well, the guards quickly brought her down by surrounding her, grabbing a hold of anything they could, and tearing her apart. Unfortunately, before they could arrive, Ast managed to murder a child. We really weren't prepared for an assault from withing the colony. We've removed the cabinets from Ast's room, as well as the kid she killed, Urvad. Hopefully, everything will calm down soon.
Both Ast and Urvad have been buried in a makeshift graveyard. I pray we don't need to use the new graveyard again anytime soon.
Installed some security doors around the main mason workshops and wood workshops. If someone goes crazy again, we can lock them in until our military force can get there. Once in place, we can unlock the doors, let the insane dwarf out, and our wrestlers will quickly take care of the rest.
The paving project still is being worked on, slowly but surely. I've assigned a couple of the more handydwarves on stone smoothing detail.
Minkot Kanstukos, one of our wrestling champions, gave birth to a baby girl! We set up a room for the kiddo, so she'll have her own place once she's old enough. Thing is, I didn't even know Minkot was pregnant. I guess all that wrestling really helped her keep her figure.
It's the last month of winter, and our food and drink stores are still doing great. Our colony has 34 members right now, but we have enough supplies and room for the next migration (at least, I believe we do).
Actually, I think we're going to dig out a few more rooms, just to be on the safe side. Don't want to make the next dwarf in charge have to spend too much time worrying about the upcoming immigration.
Got the extra rooms added to the apartment floor. Looking good for next year!
Another wrestler has given birth, this time to a boy. I'm beginning to wonder what type of wrestling they're practicing... Well, at least we're back up to the population we had before Ast went berserk.
Damnation! Zon Kerathel, one of our main brewers, has been taken by a strange mood as well! Hopefully she'll get what she needs, and won't go berserk. All I know is that I likely won't be in charge to deal with her craziness. She's claimed a craftdwarf's workshop for now...we're installing doors to the craftdwarf's work area, just in case. I also canceled any work on the other workshop in that area, so Zon should be the only one in there if she goes mad.
My year of rule is almost at an end. I look forward to going back to the simple life of a Woodcrafter. The smoothing of the passage to the Trade Depot is the only major job going on right now, aside from Zon's little project. I can't wait to pass off the Scepter of Bungekiseth to the next 'lucky' dwarf, and retire to my lavishly decorated room.
It's the first day of Spring! My year of being boss is officially over! As I enjoy a plate of Horse-rritos and Dog-adillas, I take stock of our colony's current situation. We have tons of food and drink, enough to supply us for years to come. Our apartment complex is large enough to support twice our population. We have a military comprised of expert wrestlers, 8 in all, who patrol the entrance. We've increased the size and variety of the stockpiles near the Trade Depot. All in all, it's been a good year, with the only exception being the deaths of Ast and Urvad. Now, the only thing left to do is to decide who wield the Scepter of Bungekiseth next...
