Srinagar Salukis has been one of the top Saluki kennels in the world for over 50 years. Winafred and her daughter, Afton, fell in love with a photograph of a Saluki in a National Geographic when Afton was nine. Ten years later, Afton finally found a pair of Salukis (then very rare in the U.S.), and brought home the foundation stock of the Srinagar Saluki Kennel. Until her death in 2006, Winafred worked tirelessly to bring Salukis from an unknown breed into the homes and hearts of hundreds of people. The offspring of her kennel include over 500 national & international champions and Best in Shows. She was named 1968 Breeder of the Year by the Kennel Review and is an AKC Breeder of Merit.
Throughout her life, Winafred worked tirelessly to bring the attention of the country to her beloved Salukis. Her work was integral to one of the first books published in the United States on the care and training of Salukis: How to Raise & Train a Saluki, with a Chapter on Coursing by Winafred B. Lucas, Ph.D.. She co-founded the American Saluki Association - the largest Saluki organization in the world - the San-Angeles Saluki club for Southern California, and the first open field and lure coursing associations. Afton continues the legacy of Srinagar, raising Salukis who are adored companions and gorgeous examples of the breed.
