Current ResearchI have completed my doctoral dissertation on Regionalism. My investigation, entitled "Región y nación en Guatemala: La obra de Virgilio Rodríguez Macal," examines how three Regionalist novels -Carazamba (1953), Jinayá (1956) and Guayacán (1962)- engage in the intellectual and literary debates about the nation at a crucial moment in mid-twentieth-century Guatemala. My main contention is that one of the country's most popular authors puts forward a democratic and liberal vision that both demarcates his works from that of his contemporaries, and helps explain the scant critical attention he has received. The ideological divides of the century, reflected in academia and the country's tragic history, have marginalized a fictional world grounded in a neglected region of the country, which allowed the author to critically engage both Guatemala's intellectuals and governments, irrespective of their political stripes. My investigation seeks to shed light on this original vision and reveal the nation imagined by the author.
Future Research
I am primarily interested in Spanish American narrative for which my current research has provided a basis for future investigations. I would like to explore the influence of 17th-century European literary traditions on contemporary Spanish American literature. In the Central American milieu, I have identified several Criollista writers whose novels necessitate scholarly research, especially from Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.
Other Experiences
At the University of Ottawa I have conducted library searches, bibliographical compilations, translation and analysis of academic articles on textual criticism and the Spanish Golden Age theatre. At the University of Saskatchewan, I carried out literature reviews, participant interviews and data analysis as a research associate for a project studying rates and reasons for success in an adult learning program.
