ABOUT MYSELF

I am originally from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and have lived in Canada for over twenty-five years. I was a resident of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for fifteen years, and became a Canadian citizen in 1997. While in Saskatoon, I completed a Master in Education at the University of Saskatchewan. In 2007, I moved to Ontario to further my graduate studies. I finished my Ph.D. program in Spanish American Literature at the University of Ottawa in 2012.

My research interests include Spanish American narrative, and the Central American novel, more specifically how the representation of regions in Criollismo reflect both an obsession with the territorialization of the nation, and the failures of the modernization project in Guatemala.

I have taught a variety of Spanish language classes, English/Spanish translation, and Hispanic culture and literature courses at the university and adult continuing education levels for over fifteen years, starting in Saskatoon, continuing in Kamloops, British Columbia and Ottawa, Ontario, and nowadays in Waterloo, Ontario.

I am also interested in creative writing and translation. I have published short stories in Canadian literary magazines and anthologies. I have also worked on literary translations (Spanish/English), a sample of which has appeared in the Canadian Association of Hispanists website y the e-Magazine K1n.
